Robots Are Taking Our Jobs – this firm is replacing employees with AI

We’ve talked about the automation of jobs on the site before. Most people are probably hip to gigs like “driver” being taken over by AI and retail workers replaced by automated kiosks but it goes much further. The Japanese insurance firm Fukoku Mutual Life Insurance is replacing over 30 employees with an AI.

The idea is that the AI, based on IBM’s Watson Explorer, will be able to review and process claims faster, with less error than its human counterparts. The company does say that a person will check all the final claims before they are paid but this is still a little disturbing.

This is the kind of job that people don’t generally think about as being taken over by computers but this could be the coming reality for a lot jobs as our AI systems get better. For many careers, we’ve been building simple systems to get them done faster and with less human involvement for years so it’s no surprise that we’re seeing full automated take over at this point. This is just a test run but if it is successful, we may see more jobs of this nature in the future taken over.
