Vine Robot – this soft robot may one day save lives

When we think of robots, we have very specific ideas about them. Even though we’re starting to see them in different body types, most of the time, we think of something hard. Well change that perception because the Vine Robot is here to show you that you don’t have to be hard to be tough.

This soft robot is a growing tube of plastic fashioned after a vine. Once activated, it will grow outward pushing things aside with its soft body are slipping through cracks to make it to wherever it’s trying to get to.

Still in development, this growing bot may one day be used to transport air or water to victims trapped in rubble or be eyes on the inside for dangerous situations. Currently it’s powered with pneumatic air pressure. Its unique design keeps it from getting hung up anywhere on its journey so applications for this bot are wide. Check out the video below to see it in action.
