Wifi Tapestry – see how you share things with this art project

Wi-Fi is all around us. It’s a normal, invisible part of all of our lives. One designer is has put together an art project that lets you “see” these invisible frequencies with the Wifi Tapestry, the wall hanging that changes with your Wi-Fi signal.

The controller on this tapestry monitors traffic on 13 different channels of the Wi-Fi spectrum. When data is transmitted on any of these channels, a current is set triggering thermal elements that have been worked into the weave. These heat up and cause the color changing yarn to create patterns on the tapestry. These are change as usage change.

In short, it’s changing data into heat and color for your eyes. This art project is one of the ways that artists are attempting the capture the greatly intangible ways we share data with each other. It’s a neat project. Check out the video below.
