Plant Based Water Filters – brewery takes green approach to water purification

Beer isn’t one of the topics that we cover here but this brewery is doing something so amazing that it’s worth a mention. The Koningshoeven Abbey one of the brewers of Trappist beer is implementing a plant based water filtration system to cut down on their pollution.

Brewing beer uses up a lot of water, most of which is just dumped as waste. The monks at this abbey have constructing a water filtration system using 70 different specious of plants in order to clean the water so that it can be reused rather than dumped. The water flows past the plant’s roots where it interacts with micro organisms to be purified.

When it’s fully operational it will be able to purify nearly 450K liters of water every seven hours without a human hand involved. That’s really something! The abby also wants to use this process to purify human waste water in the same way which is more on the gross side but would likely be better for the environment.
