Sustainable Options for Food Waste – startups are beginning to tackle this yummy problem

We waste a lot of food. Like, as a society, not just the leftovers that you let go off in your fridge. We throw out food from restaurants, grocery stores, and even before it makes it to those places for not being pretty enough and startups are beginning to fight this problem.

Food waste is a huge issue, especially considering that people are literally starving while bananas are being tossed for being too big, too small, or just not curved enough, for example. The production and transportation of food contributes to a ton of greenhouse gasses and the food itself is just wasted.

Startups are beginning to take notice and are coming up with a number of ways to do something with this waste. Bioplastics, fertilizer, and even upcycling waste to keep it in circulation and from adding to landfills. The real goal is to stop food waste where it begins, by building more sustainable practices, but making sure that it doesn’t end up in a landfill is a good first step.
