The iOpus Private Internet Gateway (iPig). At last, something with an i in it that’s got absolutely nothing to do with an iPod. Honestly. Nope, instead think WiFi and security encryption software. For free. No snoopers snooping your snoops, dog.

Unlike other technologies, iPig works with any kind of Internet connection (Wifi, WLAN, 802.11 a/b/g, wired ethernet) and requires NO configuration of any kind. You just start your favorite web browser, email client or chat software and switch the iPig encryption on: iPig grabs all Internet traffic before it leaves your PC and encrypts it securely! iPig also works with all major firewall software like Zonealarm or Norton Internet Security. The software runs on Windows 2000, XP and 2003 (Sorry, Windows 98, ME are not supported).

So with iPig you send all your private, secret stuff through a server in Germany, operated by a relatively-unknown company who makes no promises whatsoever as to what they’re going to do with the data they pass through for you? I don’t think so, thank you.

THanks a lot for this article. I installed iPig and it works very well for me.

    Some comments:

    (1) Hamachi is something different than iPig, if all you need is a secure WIFI connection, iPig is much easier to use and thus more secure. AFAIK Hamachi does not allow you to set up your own servers, but iPig does.

    (2) For the public iPig servers they clearly state that they do not log anything. See http://forum.iopus.com/viewtopic.php?t=376

    (3) But best thing about iPig is that while you CAN use their servers for free, but you do not have to! You can download the iPig Server Express Edition and set up your very own iPig server. Thus, no data goes through their servers and this ensures 100% privacy for all your iPig protected communication. I set up my own iPig Server on my office PC.
