Smart Nav. Trafficmaster runs a UK network of 7500 road traffic camera sensors. The company has now launched a vehicle navigation system which goes one step beyond conventional GPS satellite navigation and uses a personalised route finder which takes into account actual live traffic data as it’s happening on your proposed route. The journey is also constantly monitored to re-route you if things get a bit jammy so to speak. Sounds like a pretty excellent route navigation systems, doesn’t it? But it’s priced accordingly at £400.00 ($697.00) plus a yearly traffic nav subscription of £120.00 ($209.69).

  * Just one press of the Smartnav connects you to a round-the-clock control centre and friendly Personal Assistant (PA). * PA enters your destination details into a central computer, which calculates the optimum route, avoiding the traffic using Trafficmaster’s up-to-the minute traffic information. more about traffic data * In just a few seconds your route is downloaded to the car and clear verbal turn-by-turn instructions are provided throughout your journey. * Your journey is constantly monitored by the computer, so Smartnav will warn you of new delays and will look for a quicker alternative route. The better route is downloaded into your car at a press of the button.

  • Where do I start? 400 plus 10/M to get erroneous traffic info??!?!?! Yes, that’s right erroneous – In my experience, TM traffic detail is rubbish! At best, it’s too late, but it mainly misses jams I’m sat in.

Now, I’ve just got myself route-66 on my mobile. 250 gets you a voice and graphics interface, plus it gets traffic updates for free.

  • Hmm…interesting Rob! I thought the main thing about TrafficMaster was the accuracy of their data? Strange. But you’re preaching to the converted about Route 66 too. I’ve been running it on my Nokia 3230 for a while now and it’s excellent value for the money. :-)
