Printer Anywhere. Man, colour me frustrated. This appears to be one of the most innovative and downright useful applications I’ve come across in a long time and can I get it to work on my rig? Can I heck! Tsk.

Basically it lets you set up any printer as a global shared unit, so you can literally print a document to that printer from anywhere you’ve got a web browser. It’s such a cool app my teeth are chattering. But…despite several emails to and from the developer’s offices…I can’t get the thing to test print from one laptop here at Ferret Towers to another laptop in the next room. It should work, but it just comes up blank. I’d love to give this an 11 out of 10, but can’t. Aaarghnnngg. Why don’t you lot have a go?

With PrinterAnywhere you can print documents and photos on other people’s printers as easily as on the local one connected to your machine. No special technical knowledge is required from both – printer owner and user. It just works! With our software you can print directly from your application such as Microsoft Word, Outlook, Photo Editor or any other program you work with to a printer connected to another computer next door or ten thousand miles away (anywhere!).

I tested with a simple text file then an Open Office document. Both came through instantly. The page order was reversed but that’s ok. Luckily I have two PCs beside each other but they’re on two completely different networks and the software works fine. I tested with PDF files and came across a font error. I presume this is a font embedding problem or PPD related issue. The software is at beta stage so these problems may be resolved. Hopefully I’ll be using this from home to print my colour prints on the Laser Color at work!!!

Hmm…maybe the problem is that you can’t print between two computers on the same network (which is what I was trying to do)? Everything with me seems to go as it should, but I just get a blank sheet at the printer end and nothing prints out.
