One of the suckiest things about search on mobile phones is the fact that it doesn’t work. No it doesn’t. But it’s getting there, primarily because the big players have realised that there’s a huge latent demand for information on the go. Nice to see, therefore, a new update from a brand leader. Yell.com Mobile, part of the Yellow Pages empire, has just re-launched and it’s a nice effort all round in terms of the interface, data and ease of use. I have to disclose that I’m a consultant to the company, but even so I reckon that they’re definitely going to be the local search service to beat in the UK. Google just isn’t in the same ball-park when it comes to the depth of local business knowledge that Yell has in its database. Watch for this whole area to heat up white hot in the next year or so, as the recent Telll Me launch proves.
