I Let You (Iletyou.com) is a pretty bold adventure in user generated content. It basically lets anyone set up a Netflix type video and game rental store for free, using their own stock and charging their own prices. The idea is that many people have huge collections of discs which they can profit from, either via renting out or exchanging within the community. It’s brave all right, if only because many pundits predict that on-demand movies and games will eventually render assets on physical media obsolete. Still, one to watch.

iLetYou is built by its users. Users are encouraged to take advantage of iLetYou as a rental and exchange medium. Our users see more movies, play more games, save money, make more money and have more fun. The iLetYou platform is truly about fun – hopefully you can see the hard work and joy that every single team member has put into it. iLetYou currently supports DVDs and games in the US from a wide selection of stores, small shops and individuals. Is it legal?
I thought music & DVDs etc. were for the sole consumption of their owner and were not supposed to be screened or lent out in that way.

According to their website:

“Under copyright law, there is no special license required to rent DVDs or video games you own for home use. All items for rent on iLetYou are specified for home use only. If a renter screens a movie to a large audience for commerical [sic] purposes, he or she would be breaking the law, not you.”

Although, if I were to use their service, I’d want to confirm this…

It’s absolutely legal to rent your DVDs. The First Sale Doctrine of US Copyright Law allows you to legally rent or resell your DVDs or video games after the “first sale” without the copyright holder’s consent. It’s this law that allows video stores, large and small, to exist – and you have the same rights whether you are a large company, small business or individual.

Home use simply means that you are renting items out for home use only – this is explicit in our Terms.

I’m not as familiar with other countries, but similar laws must exist to allow rental stores to operate.
