First Airbus A380 delivered to Singapore Airlines – the hotel in the sky…at a price

Airbusa380singapore

Just watched the live official delivery of the first Singapore Airlines A380 super plane on the BBC live video feed, and it was rather…er….corporate. Lots of suits and poor smiling hostesses standing on stage trying not to fidget. A few interesting things that came out though…

  1. They have it configured to carry 471 passengers. That’s a lot of visas, peeps.
  2. Every coach passenger gets a 27 cm video screen (that’s almost a foot wide) with a USB port and PC charging port.
  3. Business Class gets 86 cm wide and flat sleeper seats.
  4. Premier Class gets a ‘private suite’. Yep that’s right the rich get a hotel room in the sky with a full 6’ 6” double bed with mattress, massive televisual screen with all the trimmings and things like breakfast in bed stuff etc etc. The effect is like small railway carriages for each person. There’s 12 of them on-board each plane. Check out the pics below (click on them for bigger) that I snapped from the video.
  5. You can invite people for a meal in your private suite (it converts into different configurations depending on your needs, natch) but only if they’re in Premier class. No getting your coach friends in for a free posh nosh, chum.
  6. First commercial flight 25th October.

But at the end of the day, it’s still a giant tin can flung into the air at unfeasibly high speeds isn’t it?
