AmAze – cool free GPS software for just about any mobile phone

Amazegps

AmAze is free GPS satellite navigation software for any Java enabled mobile phone (which covers a huge selection of handsets). Unlike similar offerings from elsewhere, this is your full on, voice enabled, turn by turn software which features not just maps but also photo satellite images during navigation in many areas. It’s got a great selection of international maps, offers yellow pages type business info and gives a choice of pedestrian or vehicle navigation as well.

The free bit? Well they beam advertising at you, which they can do because the maps are sent to the handset in real time over the air via GPRS or 3G, so you really need a flat rate data plan to avoid racking up large bills. But even if you haven’t got that, it’s the kind of mobile phone software that would be very useful in an emergency. Just keep a wired or Bluetooth GPS dongle in your glove compartment and you’re set. Yep, we’re definitely impressed so far.

amAze enables to calculate the route of a journey to any address or point of interest. Bluetooth connection with a GPS receiver will indicate your location along the route with vocal and graphical guidance to your destination in the shortest possible way. amAze is a collaborative effort led by LocatioNet Systems Ltd., together with some leading vendors in the fields of mapping, yellow pages and other geographically related content.

  1. Peter Martin says:

    Amaz…er… ing.

I not long heard of something similar… for money… from Garmin, and barelled down to Fones4you to see what’s what.

Sadly (or maybe luckily) my less than a year old, bells and whistles (then) Sony 750i was too steam-driven to work.

    Fingers crossed this might!
