Searchmash – stealth Google testbed points to the future of the search interface?

Searchmash1

If you think the current Google interface is minimal, you oughta take a look at the one the Google folk are testing out on Searchmash, their stealthy-ish UI testbed. 14 words. Finish. The results pages also come with some interesting new sauce. Ajaxified …more results, embedded video, image, Wikipedia and blog results and a very nice summary view (Hide Details) which lets you parse a whole load of results in a single line link view.

I’ve grabbed some shots just because it seems that the site is not always available (‘please bear with us when the site is unavailable as we are limiting its use’)

  • it appears to have a lot of the functionality already found on Ask.com. Still though this will undoubtedly make the Google a better search engine.

  • Methinks some of those gray cells are going! The Ferret uncovered SearchMash way back last year (almost to the week!)

But I think the results are better this time around!

  • No, no, I *distinctly* remember that it was really rubbish back then. Honest. I didn’t forget. Really. No, I’m not kidding…seriously. :-)

  • This is a complete rip-off of Ask.com–awesome when the big gorilla steals from the upstart monkey. Go Monkey!
