LimePC – new Chinese Linux powered iPod sized micro computer

Limepcm1

LimePC. Debian Linux powered super tiny PC saunters over the horizon from Chinese manufacturer Tsinghua Tongfang. Based on Freescale’s ‘motherboard on a chip’ the device features Bluetooth, WiFi, Ethernet and USB 2.0 connectivity, so this is clearly a fully Web enabled puppy dog. The product site doesn’t carry much information as yet, but the talk of ‘LimeConnect’ leaves us a little perplexed. Is this something like the ill-fated Pogo walled garden Internet access concept? We do hope not.

LimeConnect is our proprietary hardware-based, transport-agnostic secure data delivery platform. It is a freely available tool to solve the complexities and incompatibilites that are hampering growth and adoption in today’s consumer media markets. It is the simple, ubiquitous secure devliery means that has long been needed by the music, video, movie, web and digital services industries.

  • I can’t read the screen on a close-up shot… Hmm…

  • There’s more info at linuxdevices.com, including larger viewable screenshots.

LimeFree.org isn’t generating any content for me (site down?) but from googling… LimeOS itself, appears to be a full-screen HTML rendering environment (link).

I’m guessing now since there isn’t alot of info about this… but it seems like the unit is built to handle media files (music, videos), with the rest of the support coming from web 2.0 type apps within the html environment. Sounds a little like the gOS but in purer form (less reliance on client apps and more reliance on a pure Web Browser Kiosk that mimics a complete Desktop environment).

If this is the case, it’s sounds like j2se on a cell phone but richer and faster – especially given the processor on this thing.

They apparently have three models. The one listed here is the smallest (pda-style) and they work up to a desktop solution. Looks promising… though right now I’m really more interested in learning more about LimeOS itself (hope the site comes back online).

  • Hmm…thanks for that twocents. Lifefree.org didn't work for me either, so I'm wondering whether it's ever been up (since it appears to be a developer site). Regarding the web app focus, that would make sense, although it would be so much better if the thing included a 3G slot for really useful computing on the go.

  • Me want “secured devilry.”

  • My goal for today is to and use the phrase “transport-agnostic” in a sentence today at work. That’s gold!
