Rather like using dynamite to fish in a lake, bargain hunting is becoming something of a killer sport, and the writhing creatures on the end of the line are the retailers, struggling to balance lower margins with increased price competition. Of course it’s technology that’s changing the odds in favor of the consumer, and a couple of new mobile apps are pointing the way to the future.

Photo and image editing has been dominated for a very long time by the Adobe product Photoshop, and quite rightly so. No other program has come close to delivering the level of sophistication and feature set that Photoshop does, and that’s why it’s been the choice of professionals for so long. There have been attempts by other commercial companies to compete, most notably PaintShop Pro, now owned by Corel, but by and large they’ve not made any impression on the…

I’ve started to use my phone as a music player much more nowadays, especially when I bike down to the shops or whatever (yes I’m careful not to shut out traffic noise!). One of the thing I’ve noticed though, is how annoying it is when different tracks play at different volumes. I’m not just talking about quiet tracks, but also tracks which should be loud but which aren’t for some reason (probably because I ripped them poorly from my CD).
