Malware in Charger Cables – be aware of whose cord you borrow

Sharing charger cords is a common practice. Friends, people you barely speak to in the office, family, strangers, it doesn’t matter. We all have borrowed them when the battery is dying on our devices. New security concerns may make us second guess that practice. Turns out you can hack devices through charger cables.

This practice isn’t something wide spread but it is cheap and scalable. Malware can be hidden in cords and used to take over laptops and computers. That would be a real bummer. Obviously we’re all wary of plugging in strange flash drives and the like but we tend to think of cords as just. . . well cords!

Turns out that’s changing and w e should be a little bit more mindful where we borrow from. Of course this isn’t something that’s coming for the general public but it is something to be aware of.
