OpenSignalMaps – where are the nearest cell towers and how strong is your signal?

Opensignalmaps

OpenSignalMaps is a very cool Google maps mashup which uses crowdsourced info to track and identify cellphone towers. The clever thing about the app is the fact that the devs have connected this info with user handset information to give an idea of signal strength as well. Very useful if you’re getting fed up with dropped calls and suchlike from your home.

The service uses a free Android application to add data, so anyone can contribute to improve the quality of the database by installing the app on their phone. It’s this kind of neat user focussed app that really gets me excited about the future of mobile applications in general. Oh and the service also aims to map WiFi too, although that’s probably less useful in the long run I’m thinking.

With your help, we’re creating a comprehensive database of cell phone towers, cell phone signal strength readings, and Wi-Fi access points around the world. This data is collected via our Android application and uploaded to our servers, taking care to use as little processing power and battery life as possible. You can use this website to browse the data we’ve collected, including heat maps that show exactly how strong signal is in any particular area, as well as all the nearby towers for your carrier.
