Plastic Bag Ban Works – two large chains in Australia show how promising a bag ban can be

Two large grocery chains in Australia stopped supplying single use plastic bags in hopes that it would help reduce some of the plastic waste and it worked. There was an 80% drop in plastic bag consumption across the nation. It is hoped that this action will encourage other retailers to stop supplying them as well.

The move was met with backlash but ultimately it went ahead and the results speak for themselves. Reusable bags are available from many retailers so that shoppers can bring their own with relativity little trouble and it seems that it does make a difference.

This change really impacted waste. It may seem like something small but we use a lot of plastic when we go shopping. Even if a store does offer plastic, bringing your own bag might be a good practice to start if you haven’t already. It’s time to start focusing on the “reduce” part of the three R’s.
