Hmmm, a new software program from US company Codeweavers promises to let you use your Microsoft Office application on a computer running Linux rather than Windows. The $54.95 CrossOver Office product could really alter the computing landscape, because it basically lets large corporates run their Office applications without needing to buy a Windows licence, which could potentially save them millions of dollars a year. Even more worryingly for Redmond, the company is promising to support additional Windows products by the…

It looks as though fuel cell technology may be on the verge of hitting the big time. Casio have recently reported on successful R&D efforts with their version of the technology which they say will halve the weight of laptops and give them a 20 hour battery life. The company says that it aims to commercialise the technology starting in 2004, although there is no word on possible price levels.

There’s going to be some real jostling going on in the Smartphone market by the end of this year, if the current rash of cool new product announcements is anything to go by. The T919 from Tel.me for instance, promises to give the Sony Ericsson P800 and Nokia 7650 offerings a run for their money, although like these two the price of around 500 plus Euros may be a real turn off for most people. There is also a suspiciously…

Those clever folks at Seiko have upgraded their PDA input device and given it a new name. The InkLink product uses infra red technology to copy from paper to PDA. The device is pocket sized and costs around $100.00. [via Twomobile.com]

How to out-Britney Britney. Taito Corp of Japan and MIT have apparently teamed up to develop a Karaoke machine which can adjust itself to make the vocalist sound good. It does this by adjusting the tempo and pitch of the tune to make the singing more….er…harmonious to the ear. Eventually the system will be able to alter the singer’s voice automatically to put it in tune with the music, which is where I begin to get confused. Just how much…

I’ve always wondered where those ‘Work from Home’ signs come from. Well now I know (hint: blame Herbalife maybe?)

The Top 10 Impossible Inventions that work? Real or fake? You decide. One thing’s for sure, that Tesla guy was some inventor dude. “We are confronted with portentous problems which can not be solved just by providing for our material existence, however abundantly. On the contrary, progress in this direction is fraught with hazards and perils not less menacing than those born from want and suffering. If we were to release the energy of the atoms or discover some other…

Here’s a nice little report on recordable DVD drives from the folks at The Tech Report. If you’ve been wondering exactly what the state of play is with the various products, manufacturers and standards, then this should be very helpful.

A full sized, projected virtual keyboard for PDAs? Whatever will they think of next? Well this for one. A fabric keyboard that has just been launched commercially by Logitech (it’s a branded ElekSen product actually). The KeyCase is a brilliant concept and more to the point, it actually works. I’ve been playing with this 100.00 keypad and PDA cover combo for a while now, and it works. In fact it more than works, it’s excellent. Touch typists may have a…

I’m not into gambling, waste of time and money as far as I’m concerned, but this has got to be the craziest stunt on the Web (or maybe anywhere for that matter). Moolette (!!) is a Web site that lets you bet on the random location used by a live cow to drop a…..er…..cow pat. The cow is given free rein over a roulette table marked patch of grass (hence the name) and whichever number the pat lands on is…

This little puppy must rank as one of the smallest digital camcorders in the world. The Panasonic E-Wear, SD A/V Recorder (snazzy name) has an integral LCD, lasts for an hour per charge and records onto SD cards instead of tape. OK so the video size is nothing to shout home about at 320×240 (or half VGA) but the size of the thing is staggering – a mere 1.97″ x 1.1″ x 3.43″. Pocket sized? Oh yers!

While we’re on the Casio subject, I’m not really sure what to make of this puppy. The USB E-Pen is a wireless pen that ultrasonically transmits an image of the the user’s writing to a remote PDA via a small receiver attached to a USB port. It sounds a little like that Seiko pad device, and at $200.00 or so, it had better work as advertised. I’m still not convinced by these little pen input gizmos I must say.

Q: What’s very close to credit card size, and incorporates a 1.3 megapixel camera, MP3 player and audio/movie recorder? A: The new Casio Exilim. The company is billing it as a wearable digicam, which is one way of looking at it. I love some of the things they’re doing with this technology at the moment, long may it continue. Oh and it also has an integral LCD review/preview screen. Sheesh! Here’s another super skinny digicam, the EyePlate, but judging by…
