CommunicAsia Show Part II – Miscellaneous

As well as the usual round up of mobile handsets, telecoms plumbing and assorted comms geek stuff, there was a selection of tiny stands dotted around which featured stuff from Korea, China, and other exotic locations such as Birmingham. Here’s a round up of some of the more interesting stuff –

CommunicAsia Show Part I – Phones

This year’s CommunicAsia telecoms show was apparently smaller than in recent years, but there were still 5 halls filled with all sorts of telecoms stuff. Most of the major manufacturers were there, although notable absentees included Motorola and Nokia (which had its own small show running at a nearby hotel). Anyway, there were certainly some interesting products on view –

Fast flight

You want to create an airplane? Quickly? Then look no further than the folks at Scaled Composites. The Adam M309 plane featured here was taken from initial concept in May 1999 to first flight in March 2000. Yep, 10 months from paper napkin to 5,000 feet. Check out this article to see a potential future product of the personal transportation market. Toyota apparently is investing heavily in small aircraft research like this, the aim being to eventually produce planes for…

Bizarre bits and bobs for sale

The American Science and Surplus site lists a gigantic selection of stuff for sale, which to be quite frank looks a lot like a bunch of remaindered tat on its way to the recycling plant. But of course that is all part of the fascination of surplus goods, isn’t it?. The site itself is no great shakes, but this article, which covers an in depth visit to the actual store, gives a much better flavour of the place and produce.

Mobile courses

When I first read this BBC Online report, I thought that it was announcing a new set of university courses which could be accessed via a mobile phone. Which I thought was interesting, puzzling and not a little impossible. Turns out I was wrong, and it is actually just a BSc course on mobile phones. Which is marginally less interesting, but just as puzzling.

DVD recording for the masses

The Ricoh MP5125A is just one of the new raft of recordable DVD +R (and +RW) PC drives which are about to storm store shelves over the coming months. It looks as though the DVD makers have finally woken up to the fact that they need to sort out their product lines and push one consistent standard in the market. This also seems to be a better technology than DVD -R and hopefully will kickstart the home grown DVD production…

Return of the wanderer

The Ferret has returned from wandering all over the CommunicAsia telecoms show in Singapore, which was indeed a very interesting place to be. A report will be posted here after the weekend, when I’ve had a chance to collate all the business cards, interview notes and extraneous material. I didn’t have time to set up the new email posting feature of Blog unfortunately, hence the lack of posts in the interim.

Travelling mammal

The Ferret is off on his wanderings again, so normal service will be resumed around the 25th June. However, due to the genius of young Fahim, this Blog software should now allow for email postings whilst on the road. So if it works out maybe a post or two will make their way onto these pages during the intervening period – if they’re interesting enough!

Make that PC call!

If you ever get the urge to call up your PC and control it a little using your mobile phone, you may want to chat to the folks at IBM Japan. Their Desktop On-Call Gateway software looks to be just the ticket for all that long distance remote manipulation of those 3D Excel spreadsheets. Or maybe not!

Let your fingers do the talking

The TouchStream range of computer input devices from FingerWorks look swell, but why do I have the feeling that they will not be as easy to use as they claim? Could it be because I find trackpads so annoying? I think so. [via Madville.com]

Pinball wizard

I used to own a full sized pinball table when I were a young lad, and it were great. Huge things they are though, when you put them in an ordinary sized room, and very very noisy with all that clanking and dinging and stuff going on all the time. But such a fabulously wonderful way to waste hours! I still miss it sometimes when I’m in a nostalgic frame of mind. But now I – and pinball anoraks the…

Are you receiving me?

The Crux II BTGPS Receiver is a small unit which incorporates GPS satellite navigation circuitry alongside a Bluetooth chipset. The result is a little box which can add wireless GPS functionality to any device, including a phone or PDA which supports Bluetooth. I suppose the idea is that you pop the unit into a briefcase or pocket after which it will beam locational information to the PDA as needed. I assume that it needs some sort of software link to…

Bluetooth cometh

This nondescript little box could herald a real revolution in the state of home entertainment. The AS 120BT is a Bluetooth server which can link together Bluetooth wireless headphones, speakers, microphones or general audio equipment in the home, and so do away with those unsightly and awkward cables laying about the place. There’s no word on pricing or availability, but this looks like it’s just one of the many, many ways that Bluetooth will be coming to a room near…
