The N-Gen design engine demo is back (obviously by popular demand!). This little piece of free software provides really trendy designs for things like album covers, Web pages and leaflet/flyers literally at the press of a button. You enter in your text, select the design template you want to use, press the ‘generate’ button and presto – one piece of design work all your own. Yes it is cheating, but it’s cool anyway!

The Pocket Photo Advance C-200 appears to be a handy sized voice recorder containing an embedded digital camera, which is certainly a new take on the ‘hybrid’ theme. The specs are not that special, 1.3 megapixel, 32MB of memory and a TFT LCD, but the voice recorder will hold up to 4 hours of audio which makes it a potentially useful field note gathering tool. Works off 4 AAA batteries and also supports SmartMedia cards for additional memory storage.

While we’re checking out the future, here’s a useful look at the state of the DVD recorder market, and some pointers as to how it is likely to go over the next few months. Apparently we’re about to be hit by a wave of multi-standard drives which will cope with both DVD-RW (and -R) and DVD+RW (and +R). I do wish that these folks would get on with it and settle down to a single standard. Too much greed!
