Longhorn news bites

Paul Thurrott’s Super Site for Windows has posted some early screen shots and information on the next version of Windows, dubbed Longhorn. He’s called it an Alpha Preview, which sounds a mite ambitious since the operating system is not due out for at least another 2 years. Meanwhile BetaNews has posted information about a leaked internal Alpha copy that is circulating around the Net. Actually it all looks and sounds rather boring.

Scam-fantastic

Some enterprising person has put together the Nigerian Scam Log site which collates the correspondence taken from folks who have ‘played along’ with the Nigerian 419 scammers. It’s funny, but not something that you want to try at home, I suspect. Just in case things get a tad nasty. [via madville]

Fossil PDA

The Fossil PDA Watch is a Palm on your wrist. There’s even a teeny tiny stylus slotted into the wristband. Reminds me of the humungous Hewlett Packard HP01 watch I used to own waaaaay back when (and which I think is still lying around in a cupboard somewhere). I thought it was really cool!

Sonar Footy Challenge

The Sonar football juggling challenge is incredibly infuriating and nauseatingly addictive. And the gibbering faux-Japanese commentary makes it even worse. I love it! [via metafilter]

Key what?

It looks weird and it is. The orbiTouch keyless keyboard is supposed to be a realistic replacement for the conventional computer keyboard. Er.. you slide (not rotate!) the knobs around on the plinth to create letters, which apparently reduces wrist tension and stuff. I’m not convinced but then again I am exceptionally stupid. [via ZZZ]

PhotoShuttle

The HiTi PhotoShuttle is a cool dye sublimation printer that outputs a 6×4 photo print onto glossy or matt stock in a mere 45 seconds. Resolution equals a 4800dpi printer, but with continuous tone the results really look like photies. The unit also looks super cool too! With print costs of 40c per, and a retail price of around $240.00 this is one neat product for the home user. Nice Steve’s Digicam review here.

Rip master

The Terapin MCR-TX3300 is apparently the world’s first dual deck MP3 audio CD recorder. It will record from audio CD to MP3 disk in one go (or vice versa) with automatic conversion on the fly, and can cram 150 songs onto a CD disk in MP3 format. The $499.00 unit also sports a USB connection for connection to a PC if you need such a thing. In long hours mode it can also record up to 12 hours of digital…

Kiss me, Hardy!

The Kiss DVD DP-450 is billed as the world’s first player capable of playing DiVX compressed movies. That means that it will cope with all those home grown back-ups of proper DVDs which you’ve created on ordinary CD disks. Oh yes! Priced at around 275.00 over here. ($174.00)

Gnutella 2 P2P arrives!

The word on the street is that Gnutella 2 is here, it works, and is a big improvement over the earlier version. The driving force behind its adoption is the new P2P client Shareaza, which I downloaded and tried and found to be very very fast, very free and very lacking in spyware.

ISeePet

OK get this. You’ve got a pet. A lovely soft cuddly moggy or doggy. You’ve also got a mobile phone or PC. What you need is a $1500.00 iSeePet. This bizarre – and somewhat sad – little product lets you watch your pet from a distance via your broadband connection, cell phone or PC and a webcam built into the main unit. You can call little Fido, feed him by operating a feed gate remotely and generally make sure that…

Smart displays

The Ferret first mentioned the Airpanel wireless display device from Viewsonic a while back, but now it looks as though Microsoft is driving the whole product concept into prime time territory. See this ABC News article. They are basically TFT LCD screens with wireless networking innards which let you roam throughout a building whilst still being connected to your base PC. Neat idea and one that is likely to do a lot better than over-priced TabletPCs.
