TiVo phones?

But why would you want a mobile phone that spent your money for you? Apparently a consortium of folks are researching mobiles that will learn what you like and start ordering things for you on spec. Kind of like a cellular TiVo or something. Huh? ‘”They start off monitoring what you do and gradually look for ways to increase their role. Over time they get to know your preferences,” says Jennings.’

Tibet uncovered

Fascinating article thrown up on Metafilter about the real Tibet which the media and the Dalai Lama would prefer we forget. More here and here.

Convert.

Roadkil’s Convert is a fabbo little (and at 47K that’s little, OK?) freeware conversion utility which will let you convert a whole passel of things instantly. Length, mass, volume, area, time, pressure, temp…you get the idea. Small and beautifully formed.

Making plans…

Small Blue Printer.com An online house planning service. Layout your home, then walk through it. More of a Flash gimmick than truly useful I suspect, but neat nonetheless.

Grand view eh?

EVERYONE is talking about the humungous Grand Canyon screen array from Liebermann Inc. What they don’t mention of course is that the 92″ version (whew that’s big, ain’t it?) runs out at a measly $17,499.99. Hah! Chump change. Update: Thanks to Ferret reader Ron Barry who points out that this is probably a hoax site (hint: try to buy something). Still, nice looking stuff, eh? Big discussion on Google Groups here.

Talking Street.

A genius idea. Walking tours which use mobile phone commentary instead of guides. You walk to a location, dial a toll-free number and hear a guide giving an explanation of the history and significance of the place. Currently in New York. This could be used in so many ways. For example why not beam MMS photos of associated things to look at while you’re there as well? Or maps to local restaurants on request.

Nividia really goes…

The good folks at Nvidia have just announced the GoForce 2150 – a media processor which will work in 1.3 megapixel camera phones. A mobile phone powered by Nvidia? Now stop it, that’s getting too silly.. ‘…enabling handset designers to add exciting product features such as high-resolution picture capture, motion JPEG video capture, and advanced camera controls for cellular handsets and other handheld devices with integrated digital cameras.’

Gerroff…

Scientists at Trinity College, Dublin have apparently developed a couch which can tell who’s sitting on it by determining their weight. ‘So far, the sofa can only deliver a personalized greeting to the person who plops down on it, but researcher Mads Haahr says students in his distributed-systems group envision a day when it will do a lot more: switch on household appliances, set the temperature in a room based on an individual’s comfort level or even prompt the stereo…

Teac retro…

The Teac SL-A100 is a fab looking retro record player with stereo tuner et al. Well it looks pretty in the picture anyway. The turntable can even play 78s, although apparently you don’t want to try that unless you know what you’re doing.
