CCTV cam research

Actually it looks more like a web cam site, but the SOS Camera Watch from the Data Privacy Lab is researching the estimated 10,000 cameras they know of in the USA to see how they’re affecting the privacy of the individual. Good job they’re not doing this in the UK with our list of over 1 m cameras The bonus is that you get to see some nice web cam piccies, including a neat live video feed from Times Square…

Heavy, man…

Hmmm, Heavy TV of Canada provide free full length movies on demand to broadband users via Real Player. But they need your financial help. Badly. The movies are not super fabuloso either, currently Airheads is one of the selections. Interesting concept though. PS. Not to be confused with the now rather pathetic Heavy.com.

GPS revealed

Everything you ever wanted to know about GPS (global positioning systems) but were afraid to ask. In detail. Lots of detail. ‘When you turn on your GPS and point the antenna to the sky, it starts picking up signals from the satellites, starting with the strongest signal.’

Disabling the peepers…

Brit companies Sensaura and Iceberg Systems have announced Safe Havena, a ‘patent pending technology platform’ which will disable camera phones and digital cameras within a particular area. I’m not sure that this is such a good thing for more reasons than I care to go into here. I know that there are problems with nasty sordid people and intellectual property theft etc, but this feels like using a very large hammer to crack a very teeny nut. I think the…

New 3D laptop

Sharp is releasing a new laptop computer which will display 3D images without forcing users to wear silly looking cardboard glasses. The Mebius PC-RD3D works ‘by sending a slightly different image to the right eye and the left eye at once by bending them in different angles.’ Sounds painful. Not many applications for it as you might imagine, but I’m sure someone will come up with something soon. Expected price will be around $3000.00 (or $9000.00 in 3D)

Health phone?

Is this right? Aunty reports that a small program running on your PDA or mobile phone could help to stop you smoking? Really? ‘It would throw up a series of flickering dots on the screen, which psychologists say seem to break some of the mental processes that drive the need for another nicotine fix.’ Sounds a bit suspect to me, but what do I know?

CD panic.

So now the boffins are getting scared that CDs will degrade and fail to archive all that wonderfully useful data that they’ve accumulated over the years. Hence the Data Preservation Program ‘The Data Preservation Laboratory is currently focused on CD and DVD reliability and digital library systems’.

RIAA gets an ear full – again…

So now even the artists are starting to join in the backlash against the bully tactics of the child suing RIAA. This is waaaay better than Pop Idol. “Lawsuits on 12-year-old kids for downloading music, duping a mother into paying a $2,000 settlement for her kid?” said rapper Chuck D of Public Enemy. “Those scare tactics are pure Gestapo.”

..to there

The TidalForce M-750 is an electric bike with attitude. You can tell that the folks at developers Wavecrest Labs are serious by their Web site. No pretty flowers and clean air shots here. Just lots of talk about ‘military applications’ and ‘light transport’. Still and all, with a 20 mph top speed and 15 mile range, the spec looks OK. Expected price $1500.00. Oooh look, a couple of nice electric vehicle sites here and here.

Sony photo printer…

Can’t speaka da lingo, but the Sony Tapis MPR-705 [warning: Japanese…] looks very much like a swish new Sony ink jet photo printer. It looks as though it will accept a whole passel of memory cards directly and also appears to sport a range of inbuilt editing functions, but I could be wrong. Oh yes, and it’s got a whopping 48001200dpi resolution. …and are those 8×10 prints?
