Dick who?

For years we’ve been joking about the Dick Tracey watch, and now they’re going to bring one out? And it’s Fossil doing the bringing? It’s a Microsoft Spot watch so it will deliver news, weather, sports, calendar, messages, that sort of thing. Nothing about delivering private eye type stuff though. Which means that it’s not so much Dick Tracey as Trick Tracey, eh?

Crazy flyers.

Those crazy dudes wot flew around the world non-stop in a balloon now want to do the same in a solar aircraft. Do you think someone’s bored? Anyway it’s called the Solar Impulse Project and it probably costs lots of money. ‘This time, the challenge is to mark the history of transport by exploiting new technologies that satisfy the demands of our era for sustainable development: use only renewable forms of energy and remain airborne without generating any polluting emissions…

PS3 to get all emotional?

Apparently there’s talk of the Sony Playstation 3 console having some sort of motion sensor and face recognition technology in it which will be able to deduce the emotional state of the player. I don’t believe a word of it, but it makes for nice PR fluff. Nice concept image above though, eh?

Boycott Gillette?

How strange. Apparently Gillette, the razor people, are using RFID radio tags to trigger remote cameras and spy on customers who pick up their products from store shelves. It’s weird because it’s such a naff use of the technology from a customer relations point of view. Ah well..! ‘Whenever a shopper picks up a packet of razor blades from a spy shelf, SNAP! A hidden camera secretly takes a closeup photo of the shopper’s face. (And a second photo is…

Get out, do good.

Volunteer Match is a site which lists opportunities for people to volunteer their services for worthwhile causes. It also has a great Virtual section, which provides opportunities which can be done from anywhere. ‘Virtual Volunteering allows anyone to contribute their time and expertise without ever leaving their office or home. It eliminates the barriers which prevent good people from getting involved: work schedules, transportation issues, or disabilities. And even if you’re not facing these challenges, it’s a creative, new way…

World’s smallest scanner?

The Docupen is billed as the world’s smallest full page portable scanner, and it’s hard to argue with that, since the thing does look awfully small in the pictures. Priced at around $255.00. Whether it works as advertised is another matter, although the samples on the site don’t look too bad.

The joy of retro gaming.

Good grief. Not content with 5 in 1 or 10 in 1 games consoles-in-a-controller type products, now we’ve got the Power Joy III which sports 84 classic games inside. Yep 84, mostly 8 bit NES games, eighteen of which you can play on the joypad itself without even needing to hook up a TV. It’s only a matter of time before we start seeing this kind of product holding old PC games like Kings Quest and the like I suppose.

Arnie’s not going to like this…

Oh dear, it looks as though the folks at Texas Instruments are heading for a fight with the entertainment industry. ‘In a move that is sure to outrage Hollywood movie studios, Texas Instruments has announced its latest generation of chips will enable personal video players to record DVD discs and satellite box office movies, even when they are copy-protected.’

Looks like next year is going to be the year of the moblogs. Mobile weblogs. Photo blogs from cameraphones. Geddit? Well Microsoft clearly thinks so. And this sort of place makes me think so too.
