Fish mongering.

The Fish memory card is a ‘universal semiconductor memory card with standard built-in USB 2.0 communications.’ There’s a baby version as well as a normal sized one. Capacities will range from 32MB to 16GB. Apparently. So, here we have yet another memory card standard for the poor suffering consumer to puzzle over.

Where am I?

WhereIam from Psiloc is a neat little program for Series 60 smart phones which activates macros depending on the location of the phone. It uses the location information of the GSM network cell to determine where it is. Genius idea. ‘Alarm That event means that end user may set up an alarm, that will activate when the mobile phone would approach or exit selected location (geographical area). So using this application end user may sleep in the train to work…

Find yer own phone, mate.

The Nokia online Find Your Phone feature is a rather cutesy method of determining which handset will suit you. Move the sliders to indicate your mobility, leisure, fashion and stuff and up pops a set of three phone suggestions. Oh, did I mention that they were only Nokia brand?

Airing the dirty laundry.

LaundryView from Mac-Gray Corporation ‘enables students to monitor the status of the washers and dryers in their campus laundry rooms from any device that has a web browser…Each machine reports its status to LaundryView(TM) several times every minute and, from their computers, students can see if the laundry room is busy, and can ask to be notified when machines become available. Once a student has started a machine, they can ask LaundryView(TM) to remind them when the machine completes its…

Flash video.

The Kibisis program converts video files to low bit rate flash format for streaming across the Net. A tad expensive perhaps at $59.95, especially since the end video quality is not all that great, but I can see where this could be useful. No hassles with video servers, or client players since most browsers are Flash enabled almost by default nowadays.

Replay gain.

The Replay Gain initiative looks to be a worthy one, which hopefully will eventually work out. ‘The Problem: Different CDs are mastered at different levels. When Random playing, the volume keeps changing. The Solution: Store the ideal Replay Gain for each audio track in the header of the audio file. What’s here: A proposed method of calculating the Replay Gain, together with a calibration standard.’

Xpress GPS.

Now here’s interesting. Buried amongst the blurb about the cool upcoming Nokia 5140 phone that we featured a while back, comes mention of a new add-on – the Nokia Xpress-on GPS shell. Basically a sleeve that you slip over the handset which will then provide GPS functionality. This is looking like it could be one heck of a handset. ‘The Nokia Xpress-on GPS shell helps you get where you’re going with maps and directions.’
