Geeky briefs.

Computer Code Briefcase.$24.99. What better way to say that you love Keanu, than to wander around in a black plastic mac carrying one of these? Well actually there are probably lots of ways, but we won’t go there right now.  This nifty looking briefcase is solidly constructed and covered in sleek black vinyl. On the sides is printed a slew of text uuencoded in old-school monitor green. It can’t be translated, due to the silver metal fittings and trim, but…

Memorable times.

The Hard Drive Watch. Time was when flash memory watches all looked geeky and naff. Now they just look naff. Oh OK, it may not be that bad close up, but faux Roman numerals are always a bit of a giveaway, doncha think? $89.95 for 128MB.  This incredible watch was designed with plenty of handsome features. The kind that turn heads. We started with a sleek, modern rectangular, brushed stainless steel case and a bold modern face. Then we accented it with…

Swampcat.

The Swampcat. A radio controlled six wheel amphibious paintball cannon armored tank. Yowsers. And apparently there’s a club of paintball tank players who do this stuff. Who’d a knew? one of a kind, 1:6 scale custom-built radio control model of a large six wheel drive direct-fire amphibious assault infantry vehicle. This thing shoots paintballs, makes a nice loud turbine engine sound with an onboard CD player and it will have proportional speed control. It was built to be watertight and…

Welcome!

Welcome to the Red Ferret Journal – tantalisingly tasteful, tacky and taut tech trivia. Is the email system breaking down under the load? I ask because I’m starting to receive an increasing number of reader letters complaining about issues with their email service. Messages not arriving, being bounced, not being sent from one addresss but OK from another, text stripped out and so on.

Clock n’spiel.

The 5 in 1 Wireless Burglar Alarm Clock with door bell. $19.95. A security alarm clock with a wireless trigger, which also features a remote door bell button? Ding dong, villains calling. How quaint.  The wireless remote base station lets you take it anywhere within 30 meters of the transmitter. Just place the transmitter on the door and a musical melody will alert you when it’s opened. Perfect for homes with swimming pools and small children. Have it alert you in case…

Adware scum run.

Richard Stiennon has produced a short report on his blog looking at the extent of the global adware ‘plague’, using figures culled from a sample of 1.49 million computers. If the figures are true they’re astonishing. To quote a teeny bit: If we take the leap and assume that the sample is representative of the Internet in total we can estimate how many machines have each of these products installed on them. Using the reported number of “active Internet users” from the…

Cleaning windows.

RegScrubXP. Pretty cool freeware for cleaning up the Windows registry. I say cool because when I tried it, it cleaned out over 450 errant entries without trashing my machine. That’s cool in my book.  Safely cleans junk out of the Windows XP/2000 System Registry, making it smaller and faster to access. · All changes made to the Registry are fully restorable to it’s original condition. · You can make an exclusion list of Registry entries that RegScrubXP will not display…
