Hysteria in the media.

This poster is dotted round London at the moment (click on thumbnail for larger size). What bugs me is not the drive against dvd piracy per se, but the fact that they’re peddling an hysterically exaggerated set of facts,  cloaked in a sinister pseudo-official veneer (note the violent staged police arrest), in order to drive their economic agenda. Do these people care a jot about crime on our streets, or is it all about profit? What do you think?

Eye Catcher VideoPhone.

The Eye Catcher VideoPhone. So it’s a ‘broadband personal videophone’. What’s different? Well for one thing you don’t look at a screen, you look at a mirror, so it’s eye to eye, not eye to camera. The other difference? Well how about £6,255.99?  Picture quality and sound are fantastic – the shortcomings of videoconferencing or video mobiles are completely overcome. The Eye Catcher is the first of its kind and combines real-time eye contact with an almost lifesize broadcast-quality picture. Pleasure, surprise,…

Keyboard begone.

KITTY TECH – Keyboard Independent Touch Typing Technology. Er…in other words a replacement for the keyboard using ‘spiralling, printed-electric-circuit wires’. What does that mean? Hmm…well it looks as though you ‘type’ letters by holding various fingers and thumbs together in different permutations. Ah well, it’s from the University of California, Irvine, so that’s all right isn’t it?  Mission Objective: To provide an ultra-portable ‘silent’ data-input device for wearable computing systems promising wide consumer acceptance due to zero learning curve for those…

Loud Hailer?

The Farrevo Horn. There are so many questions we want to ask about this product. Why would you want a personal loud hailer strapped quite so close to your ear? Do you have to look like a Bavarian landowner to use one (i.e. is it designed for yodelling only)? Can it double up as a hearing aid? Will it really replace walkie talkies? But I’m afraid that these questions will have to wait until we learn Japanese.

Sitehound malware fighter.

The Firetrust SiteHound Toolbar. Freeware browser plug-in that warns about potentially dodgy phishing, spyware or other malware attacks. Internet Explorer only (Firefox coming?) and you have to pay $19.95 to get all the bells and whistles, but maybe still worth a look?  With SiteHound, when you browse the Internet, you’re shown a warning page every time you go to a site which is a known scam, potentially loads viruses or spyware on to your computer, has questionable content or anything you…

Roll yer own camera.

The Plamodel DIY Camera Kit [Babel]. OK, so it’s a 35mm and not digital, but cool or what? I think that we should be offered all sorts of consumer electronics in kit form at a cheaper price, kind of like an IKEA for gadgets. Snap, assemble, play. Right on! About $9.00.  As for the adhesive being unnecessary, using the clock driver which belongs lastly combining the part of the plastic which consists of 33 points, just sets the screw, the camera…

Photo restorer.

Exif Untrasher. You don’t hear of many photo undelete programs for the Apple Mac, so it’s nice to see a piece of freeware surface offering just that. Enjoy!  Have you ever deleted images from your digital camera’s memory card and needed them afterwards?…I found out how to restore the images using a hex-editor, but it turned out to be pretty tedious. This was the moment when the idea for “Exif Untrasher” was born.

Lord Lichfield, RIP.

The Earl of Lichfield, photographer and a cousin of the Queen, died of a stroke early this morning. I was fortunate enough to spend a day with Patrick earlier this summer on a consultancy project, and I found him to be a genuinely nice fellow, in that quintessentially English way that is hard to describe. He had a fabulous sense of humour, a treasure trove of hilarious anecdotes and through it all no hint of any airs or graces which you might…
