True Combat: Elite – Open Source gaming gets serious

True Combat: Elite is an Open Source FPS game which is based on the Wolfenstein engine. It’s very pretty, and looks to have all the playability of any standard commercial game out there. Is this the start of a new trend for OSS? Download it and see what you think. Oh and did we mention it’s Linux, Windows and Mac?  Now, the most important question: “What can you expect from TC:E?” TC:E is a tactical-team shooter, set up in a…

The Anti-Yo Gouda 24 Karat Gold Plated Yo-Yo. Dude, we’re talking $314.99 worth of string floppin’, cat’s cradlin’, dog walkin’ funski right here. In the palm of your slightly sweaty hand. Unfortunately you, dear serf minion of the humble arts, will be unable to purchase one of these babies, because only 10 have been made and they are currently sold out. Bookmark the page if you’re desperate.  As one of the most anticipated yo-yos to ever hit the market, the…

USB Mega Hub

Multifunctional USB Hub. Think you know what a multi-function USB hub is? Well think again, bub, ‘cause it’s nothing – nothing I say – without a pen holder, mouse, keyboard, microphone and headset/speaker sockets. Man, we’re so disappointed they didn’t include a pencil sharpener in there. There’s enough room…

Wireless MP3 Shower Mirror

The Wireless MP3 Fog-Free Shower Mirror. Mmm…rather confused over this one. Does it accept FM transmitted signals from your iPod or beam a wireless signal from any iPod? The only way this makes sense to me is if it accepts audio from your iPod sitting on a nearby table, out of reach of steam or water vapour. But what do I know….? $99.95.  Bathe and shave to your favorite tunes with this wireless MP3 shower mirror. * Powerful FM transmitter projects a…

SMS Guerrilla Projector

The SMS Guerrilla Projector is a cute little toy. It’s a homemade device that lets you project SMS messages onto any suitable surface. The idea of projecting random text messages onto the back of unsuspecting strangers would, however, make me hold my lawyer’s hand ever so tightly.   The SMS Guerilla Projector is a home made, fully functioning device that enables the user to project text based SMS messages in public spaces, in streets, onto people, inside cinemas, shops, houses… Small, portable, and battery…

The 007 UV LED Torch Gun

The 007 Lighter LED Torch & UV Banknote Checker Gun. Hmm…trying desperately to work out the convoluted reasoning behind embedding a UV banknote checker, an LED flashlight and a jet-torch flame lighter in a small pistol shaped format. Did they figure that this would improve your chances at check-in? Or that you’d need to drag out a pistol to check your change in Starbucks? $6.99.  The green colored jet-torch flame burns at over 2300 degrees, is wind-resistant, and is perfect…

Pay As You Drive car insurance

UK insurance giant Norwich Union has just launched a new Pay As You Drive car insurance service. When you sign up they install a GPS unit into your vehicle (Audi A8 excluded for some bizarre reason) which tells the company what journeys you do, and you then receive a monthly itemised bill for the insurance costs of each trip. You pay £50.00 for the GPS box, a flat monthly fee to cover fire and theft and then a charge for the journeys….

New Google?

Searchmash is a clean new search engine interface experiment run by Google. Very stealthy, very interesting. Nothing mind blowing on there as yet, just a few cool new features, but definitely one to watch. [via Slashdot]  SearchMash lets you search the internet in new ways. It is constantly evolving as we come up with ideas and figure out what works and what doesn’t. Check back here from time to time to see what has changed, and also to tell us which ones are…

Skyacht Personal Blimp – up and away

The Skyacht Personal Blimp brings affordable, albeit slow, air travel within reach of everyone. Well everyone that likes floating around underneath a very bulbous hot air balloon thing painted like a demented goldfish. Mind you, one nice feature is the fact that it can be deflated and stored in a cupboard. A large cupboard. [Via Metafilter]  The Personal Blimp uses hot air (rather than Helium) for lift and virtually silent electric motors for propulsion. To put it another way: the Personal Blimp is…

Kaleidescape 1U – media for the masses?

The good folk at Kaleidescape have gone all mass market and released a cheapo version of their media player distribution system, the Kaleidescape 1U. Er…did we say mass market? We meant £6395.00 entry level starting price, as opposed to the £16,995 mortgage the wife of the original system. Some people live on a different planet, don’t they?  The System provides a compelling and easy-to-use interface, and can handle collections of DVD movies and audio CDs of any size. It automatically…

Pen Fishing Rod

The Pen Fishing Rod. A fishing rod tucked away in a tiny pen format? Yowsers. It’s telescopic, aluminium and extends to a whopping four feet long (1.2 m). But who needs to carry around a tiny fishing rod just in case they suddenly get the urge to fish? Fishaholics? We’re confused (yet again). £24.95.  A quite amazing feat of micro engineering, this sleek pen is actually a telescopic aluminium rod that extends out from the case to a full 4’/1.2m #…
