Gizmodo says don’t buy the iPhone – we ask WWBS?

Brian at Gizmodo has put up a post which, carefully and with reluctance, outlines the reasons why Gizmodo no longer recommends the iPhone. It’s worth reading, as is the response from my friend Jack at the Guardian. I agree with the sentiments of both pundits, although I do wonder what would have happened had Microsoft pulled a stunt like this, i.e. crippling a product in such a deliberate and malicious way? How has Apple got away with this so easily? Is…

eBay shenanigans – community protection at work?

I’m assuming that the fact that this ordinary 1.2 GHz HP NC2400 Laptop has sold for £7,100.00 in a less than inflationary market, means that the eBay community is rallying to protect its own from some unscrupulous villain. Not having seen this before, I’m just guessing of course. Tags: ebay, fraud

North America Telephone Area Code Map – useful visual map of telephone codes

LincMad’s Telephone Area Code Map of North America is a pretty useful tool to bookmark for reference if you need to call or identify people across the country. Area codes that have not yet taken effect are shown with a green line and the area code in…

MobileView CCTV Program – control your security cameras from your phone

MobileViewer is a Java program which gives control of up to 16 CCTV cameras from a GPRS enabled mobile phone. Yep, not only do have to suffer a shed load of cameras watching our every move, but now we’re going to get people doing the surveillance from their bath, pub, holiday home or desert palace. How perfectly beastly. And if you stick one of their £99.00 ConnectVu webcams on the other end, you’ll be able to snoop on someone in the…

Furutech DFV-1 LP Flattener – old warped vinyl records made new…ish

Furutech DFV-1 LP Flattener. Slot in your vinyl LP, clamp together, switch on heater function and presto, no more warped album. No it won’t get rid of those nasty scratches, waddya want, blood? Anyway, we applaud the tech but feel compelled to ask, ‘Where were you when we had that massive Bee Gees collection back in the day, people?’ Followed up by – ‘$1,480.00? You’re kidding, right?’ [via Crunchgear]  Every vinyl enthusiast has records in their collection, or come across LPs they’d love to own, but were just…

Vedivi – free personal VPN lets you access your home PC on the move

Wallcooler is a free personal VPN (Virtual Private Network). Install the program on both computers and you’ll be able to access your home computer from your laptop whilst on the road. The interesting thing is that you apparently don’t need to fiddle about with firewalls or port forwarding in order to get things working, which is a bonus over other free VPNs. You will however need an account with their server, which may be something you may want to think about…

Fluther – ask a question, get an answer

Fluther is a free ‘question answer’ service. What makes it different is the straight up, no nonsense interface and the fact that it features instant chat to discuss answers. Whether these answers are any use is another matter entirely of course, which means that it has some way to go before it beats the venerable and much loved Ask Metafilter.   Imagine having five Uncle Franks to answer your car questions, eight Aunt Marthas to ask about astronomy and six…
