Backup URL – save instant cached copies of web pages

Backup URL dot com creates an instant cached copy of any web site on demand. I guess you could say it’s a bookmarking service on steroids, in that it keeps all the page content as well as the address for you. Useful. The FAQ says you can register to keep a list of saved pages, but I can’t find the registration link. Ah well…probably beta.  BackupURL creates instant cached copies of web pages. This is handy if you require the content…

Red Ferret Competition – win an Elite Laser worth $400.00

I’ve been having a sporadic email discussion with Wicked Lasers, purveyors of various laser products, for a year or so. They’ve been angling to get me to review one of their products, and I’ve been resisting, as I really don’t see the purpose of them at all. I finally relented a few weeks back and they sent one over to look at – and it’s interesting. They’re very well made, albeit a bit pricey, and I can see the novelty attraction,…

Tata Nano Europa bound for international distribution – car industry in a spin

There is something deeply ironic about a week in which General Motors, Ford and Toshiba announce a collectively catastrophic slump in sales (as much as 53%) while Indian manufacturer Tata announces the introduction of the Tata Nano Europa model for international distribution. Those of you who’ve been following events will know that the Nano is destined to retail for a paltry $2000 (£1423.00) when it goes on sale in India this month. Tata has also recently completed the purchase of…

It’s also got an SD card slot, so you can boost its storage capacity from the inbuilt 4Gb all way to 11 16Gb. Winkku – cool bicycle turn indicator and mirror combo should save lives

The Winkku is a bicycle mirror and turn indicator combination which comes with bags of good looks, a practical design and a lot of plastic bits. The company sent me one to look at and it’s certainly a very well built piece of kit. Solid and dependable you might say. It’s powered by 3 AA batteries, and features a couple of handlebar attachment options, either a conventional into the end plug, or an over the top clamp with a Velcro strap…

Barebone Media PC – living room computer gets the retro VCR treatment

This Barebone Media PC comes with an Intel motherboard, 7.1 surround sound, digital TV card, WiFi card and 1GB of RAM in a box which looks almost, but not quite, like a JVC VHS cassette recorder of 1978 vintage. For this reason, I am going to tag it as retro, even though the manufacturer clearly believes it is the height of modern fashionista drooliness. Just add your choice of hard drive and DVD burner for a full-on PVR experience. £149.99.  Ultimate…

GreenWheel – all in one electric hub powers up your old bicycle

The boffins at MIT are working on an all-in-one electric wheel hub called the GreenWheel which when retrofitted to old bicycles converts them to electric power. There are plenty of Chinese electric wheels on the market, but this one goes a stage further by folding all the technology, including batteries, into the single hub, making it easier to install and use. The development prototypes still need to have the wheel spokes rejigged, but they’re working on an alternative so it can become more…

My Lockbox – freeware program hides and protects your private folders

My Lockbox is a freeware program which allows you to password protect and hide any folder on your Windows computer. Once locked no-one, not even an administrator, can get at the folder and files, until the password is entered. Simple and effective. It comes from the same people who created Hide Folders, so it’s also got a bit of pedigree. One for the tool chest.  My Lockbox is a security software enabling you to password protect any folder on your…

Coda.FM – download full albums via BitTorrent

Coda.FM has me sorta confused. Ostensibly it’s a legitimate music album torrent search service which lets you find new music by putting a user friendly face on BitTorrent search. Find something you like? Click on the button to download the whole album via BitTorrent. Simple idea and laudable. But then you look at most of the front page material and the links mostly appear to be awfully copyrighted, which makes a mockery of the site’s disclaimer – The torrent (metadata) files that we…
