Dell KACE Secure Browser – new free browser creates its own sandbox to beat malware

The free Dell KACE Secure Browser is based around Firefox, but comes with its own sandbox within which it operates. The idea of creating a virtualised machine within a machine is not new of course, but this is the first time I’ve seen a project where the web browser alone is encased in a protective sheath. The idea is that any malware will be vaped the instant you close the virtual machine, which is a lot easier than using an alternative…

Rescuing Nokia – will a radical plan help the giant survive and thrive once more?

It’s common knowledge by now that all is not happy in the Nokia camp. Profits continue to collapse, their friends are deserting them and for all the bravado of their executives it really looks as though the Finnish colossus has lost its way completely. As a long time fan of the company and its products, I’ve been saddened to see the decline of this once mighty company, a company which really defined the mobile phone business for much of the world,…

Bikeshd – cool site collates live ad photos to help owners find stolen bikes

Bikeshd is a clever new service which collates a live listing of classified ad photos of bicycles for sale from the major ad services like eBay, Gumtree etc. The idea is to help owners of stolen bikes see if their ride is being listed somewhere online. There’s a great search function too, which makes it a snap to isolate your particular model. Great idea and brilliantly done. Tags: bikeshd, bicycle, security

Tidy Favorites – interesting online bookmark manager

There’s a ton of bookmark managers out there, but this new Tidy Favorites service is an interesting example which offers some neat features. It’s thumbnail based, which is not necessarily a good thing (read slow) but the interface lets you group bookmarks in folders, highlight the exact portion of the site you want to see and you can keep temporary links in the sidebar instead of cluttering up the main screen. I’m somewhat ambivalent about these bookmarking services, because I can’t really…

TextHook Stroller Smartphone Holder – caring for the important little things in life

What better way for Mommy to show she loves you, than by avoiding all eye contact as she wheels you round Tader Joes checking on her portfolio prices? No but seriouslu, it’s great that someone has thoughtfully come up with the TextHook Stroller Smartphone Holder, otherwise we’d all have to actually interact with our babies, and that would be, like, gnarly, right? $25.99.  The TextHook is the ultimate smartphone holder for the geek parent’s active lifestyle. It tightly secures your smartphone while…

iPrint – eco friendly printing freeware saves paper, money, the planet

iPrint is a cool little freeware program which lets you set up a detailed print schedule and so save paper and money. The program will also automatically delete pages it thinks are blank –  useful for printing out web sites with orphan pages – and give you the option to print multiple pages on one sheet to save space. I rarely print anything any more, and the stuff I do is mostly for later scanning, but this is certainly a useful…

The Man in Seat61 – excellent travel site for those travelling by train and ship

What a joy to find a travel site dedicated to train and ship travel rather than the tiresome horde of flight and hotel offerings. The Man in Seat61 is a beautifully informative site providing detailed information on everything you need to travel across Europe, Asia and beyond using trains and ships. It’s a labour of love from ex railman Mark Smith, which has turned into a full time job, but the enthusiasm still shines through. There are specific pages for each possible…

Postcards – send a snail mail postcard to anywhere direct from your camera phone

I just love this cool new free Postcards app for Android and iPhone. Just install it from the relevant marketplace, and you can then instantly convert any photo you take into a postcard which the company will mail for you through the postal service. Take the pic. Fire up the app and select it. Flip it over on-screen, add your choice of text (wish you were here?) and an address, either directly or from your contact book and press send. You’re directed…
