SOL Cinema – world’s smallest solar powered cinema

The SOL Cinema seats 8 adults, runs off two 120W solar panels and teaches kids about sustainable and eco living. Wonder if they play Muesli adverts before the main feature? Cute!  The Sol Cinema, a project funded by the media arts charity Undercurrents, is the world’s smallest solar-powered movie theater. Made from a converted caravan, the theater uses four large lithium-ion batteries that are charged by two 120W solar panels. Movie theater can accommodate 8 adults or 12 children for…

The Kno – single or dual screen ‘textbook’ tablet approaches the desk timidly

The Kno Linux powered tablet computer is designed for education, as a replacement textbook, student notebook and all round good guy. It comes in single or dual 14.1 inch touchscreen configurations with up to 6 hours battery life per charge and a choice of video and audio codecs for multimedia playback on demand. It’s an interesting spin on the conventional tablet concept, so we’ll be interested to see how well it goes with this fairly chunky form factor and a price point…

DiskAlarm – freeware keeps track of your hard disk temp, saves lives…

DiskAlarm is a small Windows utility which keeps track of your hard drive temperature. If you’ve got a laptop, this is one puppy you may want to install just in case. Because, of course, you know that heat is the number one killer of laptops right? The only thing I’m not too sure of, is what’s the generic ‘safe’ temperature of a hard drive? Is it 50, 60, 65 degrees or something else?  View hard drive temperature and receive alerts…

Complaints Choirs – art, as life, as culture, as our village

Complaints Choirs have been sweeping the world for a while now, but I’ve got to say some of the more sophisticated ones are beautifully executed examples of whimsical, self-deprecating depictions of a very small world indeed. A world that has differences, but basically just wants to get along and do a bit better. What fun! Here’s a small selection of some of the most accomplished efforts. LucidChart – fab new charts application does it all

It’s hard for new web applications to make a mark nowadays, there’s just too many companies competing for the same space. So it’s really interesting when you come across one that’s clearly got a winning chance of grabbing user traction. LucidChart is one such. Ostensibly it’s just another online charting service – you know, with org charts, diagrams, flow charts, wireframes, mockups etc. But start to play with it and you quickly realise this is something special. Why? Well for one…

Mustek ScanExpress S324 – the pocket scanner with color LCD preview

This Mustek ScanExpress S324 portable scanner makes life easier because it comes with a built-in LCD preview screen so you can see what you’re scanning as you go. The scannre resolution is fair to middling at 300dpi, but it does support SD card storage and hooks up to a PC or Mac via USB. The only thing is it needs AC power, so no beach party scans for you this Xmas, I’m afraid. $169.95.  The device accepts face-down up to…

Pop Up Microlites – illuminate your world

The Pop Up Microlite product is a stick on LED lamp that you can use to illuminate your remote control, your fuse boxes in the cupboard, keyholes, in fact any space where you need easy instant light. We’re not totally sure about the remote control thing, that looks a tad kludgy for couch use, but hey we’re open minded. And the batteries last for 3 years. $9.99 (or 3 for $19.99).  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TeDPETWjYrQ  Why do Pop-up Microlites pop up? The extra height…

Pizza Clippers – shear genius?

I’m trying to work out whether these Pizza Clippers are a genius product or too stupid for words. Still undecided. On the one hand, you get an easy to…nah, can’t be bothered. So here you go, $20.00 and you decide.  It’s hard to improve the pizza eating experience – but this thing does. Cut and serve piping hot pizza slices without the stringy cheesy messy-ness. Sharp serrated stainless steel scissor blades with a built-in wedge-shaped spatula. Prevents damage to pans…

zButterfly – gorgeous looking freeware for downloading movies

zButterfly is a new freeware program designed to let your grandma download movies for free. Really now, this is getting more than silly. Every time the poor old media industry knocks off one product, up pops another even more sophisticated and easy to use. This is like a war of attrition which only the mutant virus wins. Anyhoo, the Java based program comes with a number of different interface options, ranging from the default granny friendly beginner mode, to a…

Compassion Pit – chat anonymously with a stranger and unburden your troubles

Compassion Pit is a nice idea. A free anonymous chat room which lets people ‘connect with someone who will listen’. Kind of an online Samaritans I guess. The service is open to both listeners and talkers, and while we’re not sure how the service moderates the listeners to ensure quality, it’s still a nice idea. What a shame, though, that our Western society has become so fragmented that we need things like this, eh?  You want to share your feelings, but you can’t…
