USB GPS Receiver – turn your laptop into a navigation device

Plug this USB GPS Receiver into your laptop USB slot and you’ll instantly convert your computer into the most expensive sat nav device in the world. It’s totally USB powered, accurate down to 1.5 metres and uses the ubiquitous SiRF Star III chipset to chat to those valuable little navigation satellites. You’ll need to add some compatible map software, but we’re sure you’ll know where to get that from. A cool little tool for just $23.46/£14.70.  To ensure up-to-the-second accuracy, the receiver tracks…

Mielophone – cool new open source music sharing program covers it all

Mielophone is a new freeware music sharing program which really does cover it all. The open source software (the source code is here) is based on the Adobe Air platform, and lets you stream and download tracks, watch videos, and listen to a radio playlist of artists similar to your search criteria. The Russian developers are claiming it to be a ‘Napster like application’, and it does have a very complete feature list.  However it isn’t as effective as the late Mulve.com software at…

Backup Elf – backup your files in an instant via email

BackupElf is a brand new service which lets you back up files using nothing more exotic than your email service. Just attach the files you need to store to an email addressed to [email protected] and the service will automatically archive the files for you in your account. It’s a neat idea, in the same vein as the most excellent Posterous blogging by email service, but it’s obviously designed only for small files and limited volume. This is because most email…

Maker Factory – free service connects factories with people who need stuff made

Maker Factory is a new free online service which connects factories with people who need stuff made. The seekers post their needs (e.g. a waterproof pedometer) and the quantities wanted, and companies can respond to the request. The whole service is very sparsely populated at the moment, but this could be a very interesting way to overcome the slump in global manufacturing which is happening at the moment. Of course the big question is how hard is it to tool…

Twilight Tracer – the golf ball that finds you

So the Twilight Tracer is designed to let you play golf at night. Yeah, right. You get 5 minutes of flashing light per golf club strike, and 80 hours of light in total from the batteries. Um…if you’re playing at night, it’s highly unlikely that you’ll hit the thing in the first place, which should make for some hilarious videos. Oh wait…£9.95.  The official size and weight of the U.S.G.A. and R&A, it has a tough Surlyn cover that prevents it from being damaged and losing its…

Android Protector – protect your Android smartphone from prying eyes

Android Protector is a free program which protects any Android application with a password/pin code. Just install it onto your Android smartphone and it will automatically lock down your Gmail, calendar, contacts and other apps containing sensitive data. It’s a little hit or miss in the current version, I found that the direct Gmail icon bypassed the security completely, but it’s a decent enough start. Free version protects up to 10 apps, the commercial version offers unlimited protection.  Protector runs as a…

Tiger Stone Road Maker – bricks in one end, road out the other…

This Tiger-Stone Road Maker machine is really rather clever. You shove a bunch of bricks into one end and behold, a road emerges from the other end, just like laying a carpet. It’s jolly clever Dutch, can lay 300 sq metres of roadway a day and comes in a tasteful shade of orange. Priced at between €60,000 and €80,000 depending on configuration. Extended video footage –  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cAXcqO_zJgk  What can the Tiger-Stone do for you? * Better working conditions. * Motivated and enthusiastic staff….

EpicWin – turn your to-do list into a fun smartphone game

EpicWin is a brilliant iPhone app (Android and others coming later) which takes your ordinary To-Do list app and converts it into an adventure role playing game format. That’s right, you can win rewards and level-up your character simply from completing your ‘quests’. Quirky video alert –  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AmKwF_Si734 The idea of gaining A Helm of Questionable Appeal from finishing the washing up may seem a little…ahem…Californian, but it does have a certain subtle logic. Especially if you’re a Klingon. Priced…

Qualcomm MSM 8960 chipset announced – new super power smartphones on the way

Qualcomm has just announced its new Snapdragon smartphone processor, the Qualcomm MSM 8960, and it’s a doozy. We’re talking 5x the performance of the current Snapdragon (1.2GHz dual core?) with 75% lower power consumption. Complete with integrated GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth and FM, as well as next generation LTE 4G network compatibility on a single chip. What does this mean? Well, your next smartphone will likely rival a laptop in terms of functionality, and who knows the battery might last for…

Vuze Wrap 310 Video Glasses – at last, a pair of video glasses that look reasonably sane

These Vuze Wrap 310 Video Glasses actually look reasonable enough to wear in public. In fact from a distance they look just like…gasp…sunglasses, don’t they? OK, so you’re still going to get odd looks if you’re wearing them indoors at the office, but at least you won’t look like a rejected extra from a Star Trek movie set. Now just $199.95 apparently.  Ideal for travelers and commuters, these Video Glasses turn your small video screen into a widescreen home theater with…
