The Dipr – the cookie sandwich dunker

Not sure what to say about The Dipr cookie dunking tool really. Robert Haleluk, the inventor, tells me the thing holds cookie sandwiches so well that they won’t even fall out when you turn it upside down. He needs $10,000 to go into production, which he’s trying to raise from Kickstarter. Personally I think this looks more like a Quirky product, but what do I know? The ultimate niche product?  I came up with the idea for the dipr one evening while I…

Scarlet Falcon Broom – perfect for prodding muggles on the subway

This Scarlet Falcon Broom may not be able to fly like its wizarding forebears, but it should at least earn you a place on the next Potter Fayre when it hits town. Handmade in ‘finest oak’ (is there any such thing as pretty tatty oak?) and shipped with a nice little name tag. Forty-six inches long. $68.00.  Each Scarlet Falcon is completely handmade. The handle is crafted from the finest Oak and finished to a deep, rich shade of Mahogany….

Solar Powered Mini Fridge – making cool sustainably clever

Young inventor Emily Cummins came up with this ingenious low-tech solar fridge which works through water evaporation when she was just 21. Two years later she now regularly travels to Africa to give away the design to any community that can benefit. It’s cheap to make, effective (cooling down to 6 degrees in the middle of a hot day) and portable. Just awesome. More on her site.  The outer shell of the device can be made with whatever materials may be…

The Portable Support Tool Balancer – eliminate the pain from trimming and landscaping

Anyone who’s done yard work or landscaping knows about sore muscles and aching backs. A Canadian landscaper designed The Portable Support Tool Balancer to spare his back from otherwise grueling outdoor work. The device consists of a back brace-like harness and spring-loaded pulley system that eases the heavy burden of lifting, handling and using weighty, hand-held equipment such as hedge trimmers and pole chainsaws. A swiveling vertical pole attached the harness sits above the user’s head. At the top of…

Personal Soup Chef – chops, cooks and simmers in one pot

This Personal Soup Chef does it all in one hit. Chuck in some vegetables, seasoning and water, with your choice of stock base and/or meats and set the thing going. It’ll chop the veggies, heat it all up and deliver a delicious broth to your tongue quicker than you can say minestrone. Or something. The concept is similar to the awesome Vita-Mix machine, but without the ice cream, shake, or smoothie making, but at $149.95 it’s a lot less money too.   A digital…

iPhone 4 Microscope and Note Checker – because you can’t be too careful…

This iPhone 4 Microscope and Note Checker suggests that ideas for the next big thing in iPhone land are running short. How else to explain a pretty lame 60x microscope –  y’know, because we’ve all got an urge to peer idiotically at things through a glorified magnifying glass –  and a currency note checker. It’s as if they weren’t really certain about the ‘scope idea either, so they figured they’d better sling a UV lamp in there at the same…

Space Fish Tank – wall mounted aquarium for trendy Pisceans

The Space Fish Tank doesn’t actually come from space, but you knew that right? So it hangs on the wall, holds your fishy friends and ‘saves’ space. Got it? Quite what the fish thinks about being squeezed into a slimline tank is not recorded. Good luck tiger. £29.99.  Cleaning’s as easy as popping your fish in another container, removing the tank from the wall and giving it a rinse. No gravel or plants are required, it won’t take up valuable…

Siphon – excellent freeware syncs your Firefox addons across different computers

Siphon is a super cool freeware addon for the Firefox web browser that lets you synchronize your addons across different computers. It ships with the option of a default online webserver to store your addon list for synch, or you can set up your own server and DIY. Unfortunately this part is still a little too geek for most people, as you need to configure Apache/MySQL et al in order to get it running. It would be better to have the…

Mapnificent – awesome global public transport time travel maps

Mapnificent is a very cool Google map mashup which shows estimated travel times on public transport for a growing list of the world’s biggest cities. The interface is super slick, just drop the pointer on your starting position, drag the slider to encompass your desired destination and read off the travel time using bus or train. It copes with bicycle times too, and compensates for the walk time to and from stations. The whole thing is based on a beta project called Mapumental…

How to Quickly Shut Down a Hung Windows Application

How to Quickly Shut Down a Hung Windows Application. Ladies and Gentlemen, if all else fails with an unresponsive Windows program, let us introduce you to ‘taskkill’.  Sometimes a Windows program or file will hang and just sit there frozen with none of the menus or functions responding to the mouse or keyboard. The i-Cool air conditioning system for trucks

Truckers spend hours in their trucks, often with the sun beating down on them. Most trucks are equipped with air conditioning (and why aren’t all of them you may ask?). Now there’s a green way for truckers to stay cool. The i-Cool system, designed by a partnership between ICL Co. Ltd., Mitsubishi Chemical Corp. and Nippon Fruehauf Co Ltd. uses photovoltaic batteries that kick in at idle-stop mode. The system uses Mitsubishi Chemical photovoltaic (PV) cells on a Nippon Fruehauf…
