Skype Open Source – Russian hacker opens up the mega service to further exploitation

Well here’s a turn up for the books. Thirty year old Russian coder Efim Bushmanov has apparently reverse engineered some of the proprietary code behind Skype. If true, this means that there could soon be Open Source products available which give access to the Skype platform without any Skype services being involved. When you remember that Skype has 560 million registered users and dominates the internet phone market, this is a very big deal indeed. At the very least it should result…

Knuffingen Model Airport featured in this article cost $4.8 million, contains 40,000 lights and 300 buildings and is the culmination of seven years work by the two obsessive Braun brothers, Frederik and Gerrit. It’s part of a huge model world installation in Hamburg called Miniatur Wunderland, which has taken half a million hours of work so far. Talk about a labour of love.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_06qrFnvnw There are a huge number of cool things about the airport, but we’ll just mention one – …

Acouztic – the multifunction ultra bright flashlight and MP3 player

The Acouztic from Xceon is an ‘ultra-bright’ multifunction bike lamp and MP3 player which bolts to the handlebars of your bike or other mode of transportation. The lamp is 170 lumens, the player is 3W and the whole thing gives up to 70 hours of play time per charge. I can’t help feeling this is a very cool product which could end up annoying a lot of pedestrians as you swoop past music blaring. But maybe that’s just me. Available in…

The SOFT Rocker – relax and recharge!

Lawn furniture is meant, for the most part, for function and comfort – with some fun and interesting designs thrown in. But the SOFT Rocker, designed by Professor Sheila Kennedy and architecture students from MIT, takes garden furniture and the timeless rocking chair one better. Installed at the Institute’s Killian Court for the Festival of Art, Science, & Technology (FAST), these cool-looking, tear-drop shaped lounge chairs include solar panels on top to provide power for up to 3 USB devices….

Valkee Brain Stimulation Headset

There are days when we have some brain meltdowns for no apparent reason. No matter what we try, things like anxiety, severe tiredness, and jetlag seem to take hold of us and there’s nothing that can be done. Thanks to a venture-funded, scientifically backed Finnish company, a bright light headset has been created that could drastically reduce mood swings and circadian rhythm disorders. This is a lot of newer research that’s seeing some light (no pun intended), but a 350…

Make a Joule Thief to get the last drops out of your AA batteries

If you had to total up the number of AA batteries in your house, you’d probably end up with a pretty decent number. Rechargeable batteries are great, as they have a longer life than their disposable counterparts. However, some devices such as TV remotes don’t use enough power to really justify spending the extra money for rechargeables. So what do you do when it’s time to throw away those old AA’s? Well, you might be surprised to know that even…

Flexible Blue LED Strip

The LED cords that be used for lighting always looked really awesome, but were very bulky. They are so far out from the wall that they become more three dimensional, when they should blend right in. Not to mention you can usually only find them in strips of about 5 feet at a time. If you love the look of LED lights, but don’t want to deal with the thick cords, you may want to look into these brand new…

Play the original Doom for free, inside your web browser

I love playing video games, as many other people do. But sometimes you’re on a computer that isn’t well-equiped for games, or worse, that you can’t install applications on. So what do you do in one of these instances, where you want your gaming fix? You turn to entertainment that can be played inside your browser. Polar Pillow keeps your head nice and cool at night

There are nights where you want to fall asleep, but the pillow is just so warm, you can’t drift off. You can turn the pillow over a thousand times, lay your head on the sheets, or even sit up for five minutes to let your pillow cool down, but nothing seems to work. I have had dreams of a pillow that stayed cold for hours since I was ten, and now, one finally exists. (I lead a very boring life…

Electrolux Powermix “Silent” Blender

It seems to sound a little silly to put out a blender that is ten times quieter than all other blenders. This little guy still spits out about 80 db of sound which is the same as a car going 55 mph, as opposed to most blenders that are 95 db and sound like a motorcycle. The Electrolux Powermix has a patented Sound Reduction System which reduces vibrations, and gets better airflow around the motor. If sound really bothers you,…
