Steampunk external hard drive enclosure

Look at your desk. Do the things sitting on it look a little to modern? I mean, that sleek LCD panel and flashy external drive just scream 21st century. How about changing things up a bit, and going back to the 19th century. Better yet, why not 19th century science fiction? That’s right, I’m talking about adding some steampunk flair to your setup.

The Oona is a versatile smartphone stand

There are tons of smartphone stands on the market. Some are for your desk, others mount to your car’s windshield, and some even let you put your phone on the wall. These all have great practical applications, but wouldn’t it be great if you only needed one stand for all those things? Well that’s the idea behind the Oona.

Flagfox lets you quickly look up a websites physical location, and more

Have you ever been browsing a site and wondered exactly where the information was coming from? No, I don’t mean where the writer found the story, or even where the company that owns the site is located. Rather, have you been curious as to where the server itself was sitting? With Flagfox, you won’t have to wonder any longer. This Firefox extension will display a small flag of the country where the server hosting the website resides. You can then…

PotatOS uses a real potato, for science

When I was in school, we once used a potato to power a clock. I remember being completely fascinated by this, since a food product could actually produce electricity on its own. Well one young girl at the Aperture Labs took this idea a bit further, and harnessed the power of a potato to create PotatOS. This has to be one of my new favorite Thinkgeek products. They give you the PotatOS unit, and everything you need to attach it…

London mall made of recycled shipping containers

The Brits always seem to be a step or two ahead of those of us on the other side of the “pond”. London’s Boxpark Shoreditch Mall is a great example. Made of 60 recycled shipping containers stacked two stories high and five rows wide, it features a number of trendy clothing stores. Upstairs are restaurants sporting outside tables and benches. Considered the world’s first “pop-up mall”, its stores vary in size, with some using two or three containers and featuring…

Graph Words is a visual online thesaurus

One of my biggest pet peeves when reading just about anything is to come across the same word written several times in the same paragraph. If possible, I like to liven up my text by using synonyms, rather than simply repeating myself. If one is stumped, the most useful resource is a thesaurus, as it will provide you with a variety of words or phrases that can be used. I’ve used a number of them online, but I think Graph…

Behringer’s iNuke Boom will blow your socks off

Are you the type of person that needs big sound in their home? I’m not talking about a nice little surround sound system here. This is directed squarely at the type of person that wants speakers that will blow you back, just like Marty McFly at the beginning of Back to the Future. Now that I’ve got your attention, let me direct it to the image above. Notice that tiny speck on that speaker? That’s an iPhone. I’ll give you…

Rig your Christmas gifts to make sounds when shaken

With Christmas coming up, people will soon be putting gifts under the tree, to be opened on the 25th. Of course, curious minds will go to work, trying to figure just what is in those packages. You can only tell so much by simply looking at a box, but feeling its weight and shaking it can provide additional clues. If you want to really surprise those box-shakers, here’s a fun way to do so.

Flote is a beautiful way to hold up your favorite tablet

One of my favorite gadgets is my tablet. It serves so many functions, and bridges the gap between my smartphone and laptop. Surfing the net, jotting down notes, watching videos and reading books are all regular tasks accomplished with my favorite device. I will say that holding it up while I’m reading in bed can be a bit of an annoyance. There’s just never a good way to lay, and hold it up. Certainly something of a first world problem….

Image3D lets you make your own View-Master reels

I’m sure that just about everyone here has encountered a View-Master at some time or another. I remember having one as a child, and being fascinated by the different images that were displayed. It’s not hard to come across one in a thrift store, but what if you want to make your own custom picture reels? While it might have seemed like an impossible task before, it now only takes a few clicks. Over at Image3D you can design your…

iStation attempts to mimic the Apple I

If you have an eye for rare computers, then you know that the Apple I is among the rarest of them all. With only around 200 produced, and roughly 50 or so still in existence, anyone would be lucky to get their hands on one. Of course, you’re much more likely to procure one of these iStations, which seem to pay homage to the original Apple product.

Wrap your holiday gifts in delicious bacon

Everyone knows that there’s one substance that makes almost everything better. I’m talking about bacon. So maybe the vegetarians and vegans out there might disagree with me, but for the meat eaters out there, we know what’s good. Knowing that almost everyone loves bacon, why not wrap your Christmas gifts in this wonderful pork product?
