Commotion – open source tools to create your own private internet [Freeware]
One of the things that is so great about the Internet is its ability to bring people together, but often that precise quality becomes a victim of outside influences, whether it’s bad weather breaking cables or oppressive regimes shutting down access. This is why there’s a new movement growing up around the idea of building private Internets, also called mesh networks, which can survive when things get rough.
Read MoreMapping Arms Data – everything you didn’t want to know about arms sales across the world in the past 20 years
There’s something mind-bogglingly sad about a world where one of the most successful industries revolves around selling tools to kill and maim other members of the species. Preferably as efficiently and in as great a number as possible. Isn’t that weird? When you really really think about it?
Read MoreMirror 180 won’t waste any space
The worst thing about getting ready in the morning with roommates or a significant other is sharing the bathroom mirror. You need your own section of mirror for hair (this includes shaving), makeup, and primping. Not all of us live in luxurious homes with two bathrooms or long mirrors, and have to make use of the space we have.
Read MoreKeyport 2.0 took a good idea and made it better
The Keyport Slide was a grand idea that took your wad of keys and slimmed it all down into one tiny, neat package. As it was the first of its kind, there were a few design issues. Instead of letting things lie, they went back to the drawing board and reworked a good product to make it great.
Read MoreBike Dynamo Charger – keep your phone powered up while you cycle and enjoy
One of the problems with using your smartphone as a GPS navigation or music system while out and about on your bicycle is the fact that you don’t have a charge point handy, as you do in a car. Instead you’ve just got to hope that your journey is not too long so you don’t run out of charge mid-way. Well now there’s a solution that’s pretty clever.

Those of you who are old enough may remember Wing Commander, the most excellent space shooter game on the PC, which pitted humans against some fiendish Kilrathi ‘Furries’ in all out alien space war. The game, released in 1990 and inspired by Star Wars, was an instant success because of its combination of cutting edge graphics and frenetic epic space battles. The game kind of set the standard for the genre for quite a few years, and in fact was…

While keeping your nails trim and tidy on a day-to-day basis may not be a major concern for most of us, they do need a cut every now and again. However, nail clippers do require some level of precision, and the older you get, the less dexterity you have. If you face this problem and want to escape the risk of clipping yourself, there are other options out there to choose from.

We spend a lot of time paying attention to our bodies, but often ignore our minds. Living with a weak mind is just as bad as feeling sluggish day-to-day. There are plenty of activity trackers for how many steps you’ve taken or how far you’ve gone which help you to improve your abilities as you can see your progress. What would things be like if you had a way to monitor your brain activities?

I admit it. I’ve been a Trekker (Star Trek fiend for the uninitiated) for years. So the idea that the Trek Universal Translator could be close to reality caught my attention.

You know who you are. You’re the type who ensures everything is tidy, organized, and sparkling clean. Your personal mantra is ‘a place for everything and everything in its place’ (which you mutter to yourself repeatedly as you scrub). No detail is too big or to small to obsess over. You even find yourself compulsively folding shirts when you are out and about – at a friend’s house, at a store, on the street.

Digital photos is awesome, amiright? We’ve got thousands of them stored on disks across the universe, but only a few are actually worth showing to anyone else. But how cool would it be if you could upload a shot and ask someone to tweak, fix, enhance and otherwise improve the shot to make you look like a total awesome photographer? And for free?

Lighting a candle can give you warmth, light, and create an atmosphere. While they’re not necessary since we have heaters, electric lighting, and dimmers, fire is just kind of awesome. The only problem with setting these up is having to pick up a lit candle and plop it into place.
Read MoreReflective Umbrella -What has been seen cannot be unseen
On a dark dreary day, the last thing you want to be doing is walking home in the rain. Sadly, this is not something that all of us can avoid, but we can make it a little less miserable. Bringing rain boots, a poncho, and an umbrella are a great place to start, but what about walking around at night?
