3D Printing Skin Cells – this method can heal traumatic burns faster

Burns are one of the worst injuries you can sustain and are very hard to heal from. It takes a great deal of time to recover from particularly bad burns. The Wake Forest School of Medicine has a concept to make healing times go three times faster using 3D printing.

We’ve seen other innovations for health with the help of 3D printing technology. These include casts and prosthetics. This innovation is a bit different as it will actually be “printing” skin cells directly on the affected parts. The “ink” itself is made up of different types of skin cells.

The first part of this system is a scanner that reads the size and depth of the wound. This will tell the system which sort specialized cells are needed to heal the wound. Once the determined, the “printer” lays down the skin cells needed to cover the injury. The cells are grown from a small patch of skin. This method is only in the prototype stage right now but if it is successful it can potentially save many lives.
