5 Great Free Games To Play On A Rainy Day [Freeware]

With the days getting shorter and the nights drawing in, it’s about time to start thinking about important stuff, like how to make the best use of our leisure hours now we can’t surf the turf and roam the foam. We’ve always enjoyed finding cool games to play on the computer, so here’s a new small selection of five free games in different genres for your enpleasurement.

Moonbase Alpha is a NASA sponsored downloadable space simulation game which puts you in the hot seat as an astronaut on a small lunar outpost faced with an emergency situation.

The life support system of the base has been crippled by a meteorite shower and you have to repair it before you all perish, so get to it soldier. Speaking of which, we’re sure this isn’t one of those ‘let them play a game so we can find new recruits for our secret mission’ kind of thing. Oh no sir.

You’ll need access to Steam to download the free game.

Back in the day there was Sierra and life was good, and today there’s King’s Quest III and things are again well with the world. This revamped point and click adventure game follows on from the original Sierra titles and stays true to the genre in every way.

The graphics have had a gorgeous makeover and there’s now high quality voice talent and music to add to the atmosphere.

We spent many sad and lonely hours sitting in the dark fighting the fur-ball Kilrathi back when men were men and computer games were the leisure time black holes instead of Facebook.

Which makes the return of the Wing Commander Saga such a treat for sun deprived worshippers everywhere.

Once again you’re a rookie pilot in the thick of the war against the hostile alien forces, so suit up, and prepare for space dogfights, a range of vital missions and a chance to ensure security for the galaxy and beyond.

For a complete change of pace, we recommend this cute little MiniBall 2 Flash game. If you’ve ever played and enjoyed Foosball (or table football as the Europeans call it), you’ll enjoy this.

The controls are simple, and the difficulty levels are carefully tuned to ensure you graduate to the top of your game skills at the optimum speed.

Play single player or league, it’s up to you. GOOAAAALLL!!

For something altogether more cerebral, we suggest you take a look at the very cool Capstone. This browser based Flash game is a kind of cross between Mahjong, Scrabble and Bejewelled, and offers some deliciously ticklish puzzles as gameplay.

At first you’ll be absorbed by working out the optimum combinations, but as you get better it’s all about times and scores.

The music and back story texts add a nice touch of atmosphere to the whole shebang.
