Ahhhh! Nothing beats camping, that time-honored tradition where we leave our comfy homes to live in the wild for a little while. Camping can be a great experience but the main thing that determines if your time in the Great Outdoors will be a dream or a nightmare is the level of preparedness you use. These 9 hacks will show how something as simple as a self-setting rubber like sugru can make the camping experience a little more fun.

1. Heatproof titanium camping equipment

Most camp cooking equipment is metal, and metal handles over a fire often mean burnt fingers. A little sugru can make your campfire cooking experience a lot easier to handle…. get it? Handle?

2. Soften up tent pegs

Whether you’re a little forgetful, or just don’t like to be weighed down by an enormous rubber mallet, you’ll know the pain of trying to push a tent peg into the ground with the palm of your hand. Make it easier by padding the tops with sugru. As an extra bonus, the pegs will also now be easier to spot in the grass.

3. Patch-up a camping mattress

Whilst cactus spines may not be everyone’s biggest puncture culprit, we’ve all been there; lying in the dark, listening to the slow hiss of an imminent bad night’s sleep. A good blob of sugru can silence that hiss and keep your mattress inflated a little while longer.

4. Fix leather boots

Soggy toes during a mid-camping romp, whilst wearing your only pair of boots, no longer has to spell disaster. Seal up leaky patches in your trusty shoes when you’re back at camp, and in the morning you’ll be ready to go exploring again!

Put an end to burnt knuckles by adding a sugru pad between your fingers and the hot mug.

6. Fix any zip with sugru

It’s an oldie but a goldie – fix any broken zip or make them easier to use – whether it’s your sleeping bag, fleece, jacket, rucksack or your even your tent.

8. Correct your tent’s design flaws

If the tension on your tent leaves something to be desired, take matters into your own hands and improve it by attaching little strings with sugru. Poorly designed tents can be a pain, but be inspired to try and make it work better for you – don’t settle for mediocre!

9. Solar powered phone charger

Part of the appeal of camping is getting away from it all, and in today’s world that often means technology. But we’ve all seen the camping-in-the-woods horror movies, and they all either start with a missing map or a dying phone battery…

Avoid that scenario by making a DIY solar powered phone charger, and pray for sunshine!

Now that you’ve learned how to do everything from protecting your knuckles from a hot cup to creating your own solar charger, you’re ready to get out there and commune with nature.

You’re still here? Go grab your gear and start communing.
