Tmax Window – a 100% compatible alternative to Microsoft?

You’re fed up with Windows, it’s eaten your printer driver and your wifi hasn’t connected for weeks. What do you do? Well if you’re Korean company TmaxCore you sit down and over 4 years you build a new operating system. They didn’t stray far from the path, their new OS is called Tmax Window and its makers claim it will support all current and future Microsoft Windows applications as well as running Linux apps. A very big call. They are…

Wonga – mega expensive debt wrapped up in candyfloss…

Wonga is a new online money lending service which offers small loans (under £200) for a maximum period of 30 days. The site is all wrapped up in cutesy bubble gum graphics, but there’s no way to ignore the massive 2000+ APR interest rate the company is earning on these loans. Back in the day that was known as loan sharking, wasn’t it? The company has just scored a massive $22m injection of VC cash, which says a lot about…

Diamond DA42 – Super stylish twin engine, four seater plane

Aircraft aren’t usual Ferret-faire but I couldn’t go past the Diamond DA42. It’s a gorgeous mix of the WWII P38 Lighting blended with state-of-the aerodynamics and a brilliant cockpit. The DA42 is truly an enthusiast’s plane with options for everything from the engines to the pin striping. Choose between turbo-diesel engines or traditional avgas version depending on whether you want range, power or both. Then you can go to town on accessories. No iPod docks or entertainment systems though, you…

EVAC-Hood Respiratory Protection Hood – the ultimate guard against the coming aporkalypse

We promised ourselves that we wouldn’t succumb to any manky pig related popvox posts, but this one was just too delicious to pass over. The EVAC-Hood Respiratory Protection Hood is clearly designed to help bods escape from hazardous conditions such as fires, smoke and gases, but the incredibly thoughtful retailers have now slapped a hasty ‘protects against swine flu, limited stocks buy now’ notice on the thing and shoved it out to the blogs and highways in order to drum…

Voss & Mauser Implantable GPS – nice day today ain’t it…?

You want April 1st? We’ll give you some. If you’re going to do it, do it right peeps, not just some random Photoshop and a bit of har-har text. This Voss & Mauser GPS implant service site does it properly. Stick the gun on the arm, shoot the little GPS dongle under the skin. Perfect for tracking baby’s wanderings right? Love the Flash design, the funky music loop and the German (nice touch, bit of a Bond scientist feel there). Happy…

Netbooks, shmetbooks – fresh from the spade’s a spade department

Aw c’mon people, these things – and by things I mean products like the Asus Eee PC1000HE and similar – are not netbooks, OK? They are laptop computers, or portable computers or notebooks. But they are not netbooks. Can we all stop falling for the marketing trype and try and get it right? If it comes with a decent size keyboard, a 10 inch screen, a 160 GB hard disk, 1 GB of RAM and Windows it’s a laptop. I mean, good…

Windows Vista – oh good grief…

I’ve just started using Windows Vista in earnest, having moved from XP to a newer laptop and I’ve just got to say that it’s the worst piece of trash I’ve ever had the misfortune to use. It makes Windows 3.1 look positively radiant, and it’s no surprise to me that people have been flocking to the Apple Mac in droves if this is the best that Microsoft can do. It’s slow, buggy, unbelievably and I mean unbelievably annoying and breaks just…

Magnetic Air Car – so how well does it stick to the road, dude?

Update: the photos of the car used in this company’s official marketing material and web site, as well as in the article linked to below have been taken without permission from the site of Factory Five, a kit car maker from the US who produce a $19,990 GTM Supercar kit. You must draw your own conclusions! This Magnetic Air Car appears to be an absolute miracle of engineering. We’re talking a vehicle that will travel at 100 mph plus for…

EARTH Atlas – a global investment

Looking for an alternative to those pricey GPS systems? Then how about the EARTH atlas, a very limited edition 580 page silver bound tome measuring 36″ by 18″? EARTH has been a 20 year labour of love for Sydney-sider Gordon Cheers who couldn’t get any of the big name publishers to take his idea of a luxury atlas seriously. Undeterred he started his own publishing company and gathered a team of 100 cartographers and 50 editors to compile the facts…

The Eclipse 400 – zoom zoom ZOOM

I don’t usually call inanimate objects pretty but one look at the Eclipse 400 and I was hooked. This must be one of the prettiest planes I’ve seen for quite a while and I’m not really a plane person. Designed by Eclipse Aviation as a business/sport plane, the Eclipse 400 is a single engine, V-tail jet aircraft. The things is, it’s a sports plane so it’s not very big. In fact it can only carry 3 people plus the driver…

Massive Yahoo! domain name price rise – is it to pay for the lawyers?

Wow, a friend just received a notification from Yahoo!. They’re raising the annual price of their domain name registration from $9.95 to $34.95 a year from next month? Really? Wow, they must be in more trouble than I thought. What a clever move. Not. And so elegantly delivered too, via a last minute single sentence in a renewal email. The way they’ve taken the care to inform their customers, explain to them why the price rise, reiterate the value for money, offer something for their client’s…

Meteo Weather Forecast Watch – hold your hand out if you want to know if it’s raining

The Meteo Weather Forecast Watch tells you what the weather is going to be like over the next 24 hours. Yeah right, like that’s going to make us feel safe and secure in our T-shirts and thin cotton. Hah! I’ll keep my £39.99 if you don’t mind, while watching that pine tree to see what the squirrels are up to this morning.  This stylish and fashionable digital watch tracks the weather by measuring barometric pressure trends. Perfect for those who want a sleek, low-profile…

P.I.C.C. – up to 5 times the gas mileage…or your camel back

The P.I.C.C. (or Pre-Ignition Catalytic Converter) system is a ‘breakthrough’ in automotive engineering folks. That’s right bring your chairs closer while we describe how our scientific testing has ‘led us to believe’ that the mileage of all personal vehicles will increase to over 100 miles per gallon. Oh we can hear you scoff and chuckle, but you’ll see Mr & Mrs Cynic, you’ll see. Why even now, we’re well on the way to perfecting our Hydro-Assist Fuel Cell which will…
