Unchecky – automatically avoid installing nasty toolbars when you install software on your computer [Freeware]

One of the nastiest features of the current software download market, especially with free software, is the installation of toolbars and other 3rd party components onto your computer without your explicit agreement. Most of the time, these add-ons are pushed onto people’s computers because they don’t read the terms as they are installing, and just click Yes to everything. Bad idea!!

Cities are huge places by definition, and if you’ve ever found yourself adrift in a big one you’ll know how frustrating and unsettling that can be. The problem is you don’t know the layout, the orientation and most especially the transport system. There’s a ton of city apps out there to help, but for the most part they’re pretty basic, offering train, bus and road guides in a simple form.

f.lux – new version of the amazing screen light manager adds more features to help us work and sleep better [Freeware]

We first reported on the delicious f.lux freeware program back in 2010, and now three years later, we’re happy to announce that a new version has arrived. For those who don’t know, this innovative program automatically adjusts the temperature and brightness of your computer screen to a) help avoid eye strain from looking at a glaring screen all day and b) help us sleep better by making the screen light softer as the evening progresses, so we can wind down.

LucidPress – superb new free collaborative web based layout and design application does it all

We first reported on Lucid Software three years ago and even then we marked out the company and its approach as something special. “All in all this is one superb drawing and charting app, and deserves to carve a significant chunk out of the market.” Well fast forward to today and they’ve gone and done it again, with another superb web application which fills a real need and competes aggressively against an expensive big league incumbent.

DeskNotifier – cool app lets you receive and reply to SMS messages and Android phone notifications on your PC instantly [Freeware]

We don’t know about you, but we often miss important messages or SMS texts coming in to our mobile phone because we’re working on the computer in another room, or the phone is buried in a pocket or bag and we don’t hear the alert chime. Now if only there was a way to link the PC and the phone together we could avoid the problem and stay updated constantly.

GoSquared – stunning new web traffic dashboard is the perfect way to track your site visitors in real time

Regular readers of the Ferret will remember when we first stumbled upon MyBlogLog, a fabulous web publisher service which provided real time and historical stats on visitors and their activities on your web site. We loved the simplicity and the effortless way you could see exactly what was happening to your site second by second through the days and weeks. Unfortunately the company sold out to Yahoo! which then killed it, as big companies tend to do. Sigh.
