80 of the most dangerous geeks in the world – assassinating Microsoft one clock tick at a time

Here’s 80 of the most dangerous geeks in the world. Otherwise known as attendees at the Linux Kernel Summit 2007. Why dangerous? Well they spearhead a billion dollar program to bring down civilization as we know it, and deliver Open Source software to the modern world. Sticking it to Microsoft is only part of the equation, folks. If these people have their way we’ll all be using nothing but free, high quality software in a few years time, and goodness knows where…

Calc-Electric – monitor your electricity consumption using your webcam

Calc-Electric. Nick Taube has come up with a clever way to use your webcam and his software to monitor and analyse electricity consumption in your home. Just install his £5.00 program, point your camera at the nearest electricity meter and his code will give you all sorts of cool charts and figures to help you work out what is costing what. It’s also sensitive enough to identify power usage by products on standby, which is pretty bonza. The only issue I can see is that…

Color Style Studio – test your home paint schemes quickly and easily

Color Style Studio. Take some digital photos of your home and then test out different paint schemes just by using the on-board palette. It’s actually designed for house painters to use for their clients, hence the $69.95 pricetag and the fact that it comes with a paint and materials calculator, but hey, it looks like a pretty useful tool for normal folk too. There’s a free trial available on the site. [Thanks Tim]  Select a photo of your client’s house and…

Greenprint – save paper, save trees

Greenprint. Very nice idea, a small print utility to save paper by not printing out unnecessary stuff. I really get hacked off wasting a sheet of paper when the system prints out just the page header or whatever from an email or document, so this is definitely a Good Product. Should be freeware though, really. $35.00.  GreenPrint is a simple idea, but it solves a problem nearly everyone can relate to: The ubiquitous wasted page. This is the page with…

FaceCode – face recognition biometrics for your computer

FaceCode is a software program that turns your web cam and computer into a face recognition system which you use to secure your machine. The basic version costs a mere $29.99, so you may want to try it out on a non-important PC before committing your precious data to a program which may refuse – ‘’Im sorry Dave, but I can’t do that…’ – to allow you access. Review.  FaceCode uses biometrics technology measurable physical characteristics or personal behavioural traits used to…

Enso – memory resident macros

Mmm…much hype coming our way from the folks at Humanised, with the launch of Enso. As far as I can tell it’s a Windows utility which gives you memory resident super macros. Er…it’s cute, but not really rocket science and certainly not to my mind worth the launch splash or Walt Mossberg’s attention. Ah well, what do I know? I don’t mean to be snarky but I get the feeling that these good folk are charging $24.95 for a utility that some whizz…

Podcast Autocue – slick voiceovers at last

Podcast Autocue. Podcasting grows up and gets a tool that the BBC would be proud of. An autocue system that lets you sound as if you’ve been broadcasting for years. $24.95. [Another product worth checking out if you’re into video journalism is VideoCue 2, which is a teleprompter and video recorder with a bunch of features. Unfortunately Mac only though. $39.99 for the basic version].  News anchors don’t memorize their script – they use autocues, screens underneath the camera showing their script…

No more noise!

ChatterBlocker. Plagued by a noisy office? Then you need the £11.35 ChatterBlocker program. The software uses samples of voices, music and sound effects to mask out distracting background noise and let you concentrate on getting your job done. Sounds a bit *£&£(E_£>=$%_(£*$£, really.  ChatterBlocker doesn’t “stop” noise — it reduces the intelligibility of nearby conversations to make them less distracting. This is done using auditory masking, the same psychoacoustic phenomenon exploited by MP3 and related compression algorithms. Intelligible speech is…

Get yer Mojo on…

MojoPac. Hmm…OK, quite simply one of the most brilliant bits of software I’ve seen for a long time. Download and install onto any USB flash drive, (or portable device like an iPod or Smartphone) and suddenly you can carry around your whole computing environment wherever you are. All you need is a Windows XP machine in front of you with a free USB port and you’re good to go. Remember Migo? It’s what Migo should have been. And let’s not talk about U3, eh? Read…

This is the must-have add-on that every gamer needs. Only Voice Buddy gives you true, interactive voice control for games and…
