The Eccentric Cubicle – new book brings quirky left field DIY to the boring office box

The new Eccentric Cubicle book is chock full of quirky, fun things to make and enjoy while you slog out your life in that grey soul-less box of a cubicle month after month, week after…[that’s enough…Ed]. My personal fave is this BallistaMail gadget, otherwise known as a Projectile-to-Peer (P2P) Intercubicle Messaging device. A great geek fun-fest for handy harrys everywhere. Office Accessories from a Parallel Universe. Indeed! $19.79.  The intent of this book is to infuse the new-school Maker community…

DIY Headphone Amplifier – upgrade those cheapo headphones to sound great

This DIY CMoy Headphone Amplifier works out at under $20.00. Buying a commercial model would cost between $100 and $200. You do the math, Matt. Sure, you’re going to need some tools, a little electronic ambition and a liking for electrolytic capacitors, but what the heck…live a little.  This is a somewhat technical project. You won’t need to understand how the amp or its components work, but you will have to be able to follow some pretty exacting directions. If…

Beauto – the DIY Roomba kit

The Beauto DIY Roomba Kit (Japanese translation, please improve it?) gives you the chance to play all rocket scientist and create your own robotic vacuum cleaner. Do please note that the fact it runs off 4 AA batteries may not bode well for its clean time or efficiency. Nor for your wallet if you have to keep buying new Duracells. $156.00 or so in Yen like. The DIY Helicopter – man makes helicopters out of old cars and motorbikes, still alive too….

24 year old Mubarak Muhammad Abdullahi from Northern Nigeria builds helicopters out of spare parts in his back yard. These magnificent flying machines take him around 8 months to complete and are rudimentary to say the least. This yellow beast has never reached an altitude of more than 7 feet, which makes it less of a helicopter and more of a hovercraft by our reckoning. Still, he’s doing a lot better with his old Toyota and Honda parts than that…

350 Pages – super simple online web site creator

350 Pages is a new free online web site creation service. OK, so there’s a bunch of these DIY sites out there, some good, some not, but this one is not bad at all. Why? Well it’s very very simple for a start. Every element on the page has a ‘hover over’ toolbar which you use to edit, remove or add. So you can literally drag things around, resize them, and remove or change them all in an instant. And without knowing any…

Mobile-Shop – every tool in the known universe on one cart

Mobile-Shop. Confusingly this is not a tractor pulled 7–11 convenience store, but a wheeled cart which contains not one, but 230 ‘professional quality’  tools and 180 small parts. If the thought of lugging around 4000 bits of ironwork just to fix that leaky tap appeals to you, then this is your baby. Just to let you know, it’s also the most macho man trolley on the planet, so don’t bother asking for it in pink, OK? $2,999.00. This compact rolling carrier organizes 230 professional-quality tools…

Free iPhone Unlock released – saucy hack puts Apple in a stew…

Well it took a few months, but finally you can unlock your iPhone for free using a free software kit developed by some rather clever hackers from across the world. And here’s some instructions for you. You may also need the iBrickr utility. Couch potatoes should probably lean back, grab a pack of Pringles and wait for a full blown Windows/Mac installer, and if you’re in Europe wait for an iPhone to arrive too. Probably. This has been a public service…

DIY upgradeable laptop – bling blang, it’s aluminium man

Torquil Harkness decided to build his own upgradeable laptop computer as a protest at the scarcity of good, cheap DIY laptop cases on the market. We share his angst. Repeat after us kittens, homebrew good, factory mediocre. Anyhoo, he’s ended up with a 2GHz machine with an ATI Radeon 9200 graphics card, all of which can be upgraded as tech improves. And it’s shiny, dude!  This, my first original computer design came out of frustration and I hope one day…
