Apple set to launch Mac App Store on January 6

The App Store for the iOS platform has been nothing short of successful. This was one of the first times that there was a single place to track down all of the relevant software for a particular platform. The idea revolutionized the way we looked at applications for the smartphone. Now Apple is wanting to take that a step further by announcing the Mac App Store will launch on January 6. Sure, there are plenty of ways to get applications…

WikiReader gets access to the Project Gutenberg Library

Last year we showed you a handy little gadget called the Openmoko WikiReader. This interesting device gives a user access to all of the content currently on Wikipedia (at the time of the last software update, that is) without an internet connection. So why am I bringing up this piece of old news? Well the latest software update has added some new functionality to the little device. If you’re interested in reading eBooks (and don’t mind the small screen for…

Yahoo shuts down video hosting service

Today is a sad day for Yahoo Video users. It seems that the company has admitted defeat to the mighty YouTube. According to a statement from Yahoo, they will no longer be accepting video uploads from users. This is one of those occasions where I sheepishly admit that I didn’t even realize Yahoo was still doing video uploads. Seriously, I can’t recall a time where I considered either uploading or searching for a video with the former king of search…

Google launches eBookstore

It’s hard to remember a time when Google didn’t have their hands in almost every aspect of the technology world. The company is evolving every bit as much as the world around them. So what is the latest area that the search giant has decided to take on? eBooks. Google actually seems to be a bit behind the curve on this one, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that their new eBook store is inferior by any means. The Google eBookstore…

Our Debra – an eco radio star at last

Earth Hour – Turn off for one hour tonight

Don’t forget people it’s Earth Hour tonight. Starts at 8:30pm at your local time. Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia when 2.2 million homes and businesses turned their lights off for one hour to make their stand against climate change. Google Apps Marketplace – Better watch your back Microsoft

Google have just announced their own place for business applications – they are calling it the Google Apps Marketplace . There is a spot on one of their websites where they are showing off fifty ( yeah 50) of their partners in this venture. You can check out the video right here. This is clearly the next logical stage in Google’s plans for world domination,  but there’s nothing wrong with that, right? Who wants to be using Microsoft Word in…

G.ho.st and Ghost CC – No longer free

Hopefully it wasn’t something we said. Ghost CC (previously here and here) have announced that they’re closing the free service and focusing on licensing out the technology. The doors shut on March the 15th so you’d better get your stuff out quick. [Thanks Tal, photo via Flickr ] Dear Ghost User, We hope you have been enjoying our free Ghost service. Regrettably changes in the marketplace mean that it is no longer economical for us to host the Ghost service…

The Red Ferret Water Cooler – new free forum area

Yo! We’ve just introduced a new Red Ferret Forum area powered by Slinkset.com as an experiment. It’s like Reddit, with voting and everything, but designed for our own readers and users to submit stuff. We figure you may want to use it to post news, ask questions, chat about stuff and submit press releases on new products. If we see something cool on there, we’ll feature it on the main pages, so it could be useful. It’s an experiment because…

Thanks to everyone who entered our Magneat Competition, we have our winners. There was a bunch of good stuff in there, I can totally agree with postcrete after just putting in a fence myself and Phil D’s baldimatic head polisher was also a contender, I just couldn’t find it anywhere. So Brauner, Debra, Andrew and JGB thanks for your tips! Please check your email and spam filters and get back to me. Tags: magneat+competition

Happy New Year and Goodbye to the Noughties

And like that … 2009 is gone. Happy New Year’s Eve ferreters, I’ll be very hung over delicate by the time you’re reading this, so be sure to check out the Sydney fireworks on YouTube if you’ve got a moment. Fireworks are one thing Sydney does very well. By the looks of it 2010 is shaping up to be all things tablet-based, with a heavy dash of Android and hooked up via USB 3.0. If that sounds like your cup…
