Used Nissan Leaf batteries to gain 2nd life as home energy storage

The Nissan Leaf – a compact, five-door hatchback electric car – has been around since 2010, at least in the States. Once its lithium-ion batteries need replacement, the used battery packs have slowly filtered out into the Japanese marketplace as alternative energy sources such as back-up home generators. Now they’re venturing out into the world as battery packs for stationary energy storage. Partnering with commercial energy storage company Green Charge Network, who will provide the power management software, Nissan designed…

Entrepreneur “grows” real furniture

Wood-based furniture is usually made with timber, nails or metal fittings and glue. Over time, inherent weak points cause joints to fail, requiring us to repair or replace our favorite easy chair or dining room set. That’s the way it’s always been. Until now. Lampshades “growing” around formers, photo by Full Grown For the past nine years, Gavin Munro and his UK-based company Full Grown has worked with trees to nurture them, shaping them into one-of-a-kind pieces of furniture that…

2015 VW Golf TSI Bluemotion – 3 cylinder, 76.5 mpg, 127 mph, petrol wizard [Review]

Something’s up with the car world. Unless we’re hallucinating, it looks like the major manufacturers are actually starting to try and produce vehicles which are designed to be fuel frugal, instead of sticking their head in the sand about the economic and environmental situation. The result is more and more cars on the road which give more miles per gallon, without sacrificing quality, performance or style.

Luka EV – 20,000 euros, 130 kph top speed, 300 km range, electric hub motors, open source

You have to be some special kind of crazy to try and create your own electric car. Lots of people have tried, and lots have come unstuck, because at the end of the day there’s an awful lot that can go wrong with your design and plans. For example almost all the electric cars featured on this page are no longer in existence. It’s a tough world out there. Especially with the major manufacturers like Nissan and BMW engaged in…

Google Autonomous Cars – they’re real, they’re coming and they’ll transform our cities completely

In the scant six years (yes that short) since Google first sprung the idea of self-driving cars onto the world stage, things have moved on significantly. Their vehicles have now racked up around 1 million autonomous miles of driving on test tracks and roads, and during that time only 11 minor accidents – caused by other people, and mostly from rear end shunts at traffic lights!

Peugeot 208 fuel consumption world record shows how peak oil is having a real effect

A standard 1.6 liter BlueHDi Peugeot 208 car has just set a new long distance fuel consumption record by clocking up an astonishing 141.2 mpg. That’s a miserly 2.0l/ 100km. The car drove for a total of 2,152 kilometers (778 miles) on a test track in France using just 43 liters of diesel fuel. That’s got to be less than a tank full!

Groundfridge – the perfectly eco way to store your family food

Back in the day everyone who was anyone knew that the best way to store your food, especially the stuff that you grew yourself, was deep in the ground. 3D printed bricks would cool rooms with water

Warming temperatures are being felt in many areas around the world as drought conditions continue. The answer to how to keep buildings cool while keeping energy costs down may lie in utilizing older technology in a new, innovative way. California-based design studio Emerging Objects has developed 3D-printed porous bricks called Cool Bricks that can be filled with water to lower room temperatures. Utilizing evaporative cooling, an old technology where dry warm air is cool through the use of water evaporation…
