They’re called Personal Transporters nowadays, but way back in 2001 when Dean Kamen first introduced the Segway to the world, it was called an HT, for Human Transporter. It’s not just the marketing that has changed over the years, but also the public acceptance of this brand new type of transport.
We’re wasting too much stuff, aren’t we? How many times have you thrown away a perfectly good flashlight or other household device, knowing full well that it could be repaired, but it ‘wasn’t worth it’? Yeah, it sucks, especially if you’re keen not to add any more landfill to the already obscene amount out there.
Sometimes you come across an idea that’s just perfect, and so obvious you wonder why it hasn’t been thought of before. Such is the case with this new idea for a candlestick holder which collects the melting wax from the burning candle to form a new candle.
Airlines are expanding their recycling efforts, perhaps to create a “greener” perception for consumers to admire. Although most of them lag far behind in their efforts, United Airlines is moving beyond paper and plastic. They just announced that they’ll introduce recyclable InCycle™ coffee cups to its United Club beverage service this month and on United flights beginning mid-March. Manufactured by Washington-state technology company MicroGREEN, InCycle cups are fully recyclable and are made from up to 50 percent recycled materials. United…
Here’s a sign of the times. E-Car Club is the first electric car club to open up, offering hourly or daily hire of any of a small range of electric cars. The first locations are all based around London in the UK, and so far there’s not many to choose from, but the company has big plans.
Andy and Steve live in New York and own a company called Pedal Power which builds pedal powered machines. The one you see above is called The Big Rig, and comes with a variety of options which will let you pedal and generate electricity, mill grains and cereals, pump water or any number of other tasks you’d typically use a power tool for.
There’s no question that the electric car momentum has now well and truly started gathering pace, with the latest entrant to the market coming from the German giant with two letters as a logo. The Volkswagen e-up! (don’t forget the exclamation mark, Mark!) is nowhere near as revolutionary as the one we were expecting, but it’s still pretty cool, and actually breaks new ground in at least one specific piece of tech.

The new BMW i3 all electric car has been causing a bit of a stir recently, which is not surprising since it’s the first totally electric car to emerge from the German giant.
