Kumpan Electric 1954 combines serious retro cool with lots of eco loveliness

If there’s one thing we love it’s when manufacturers combine bang up to date technology with a sense of classic style. The Germans seem particularly adept at this sort of stuff – take the Leica X2 as an example – but there are also other examples we can think of which are just as good. What is it about old style design that is so cool?

Biolite Stove review – Hands on with the camping stove for gadget lovers

The Biolite Stove caused quite a stir when it was first prototyped back in 2010 and so it should. How many devices can tie together a wood-burning stove with a fan and a USB port? Well the good news is, Biolite have gone into production and are now shipping the stoves. Mine arrived last week and so I’ve been camping out on my deck putting the stove through its paces. Click through for a detailed hands-on video showing it in…

Electric Skates lets you clip on, switch on and shoot out

You’ve got to admit one thing, transportation is really going through some big changes right now. The high price of gas, the crowded streets and the proliferation of new technologies is driving a really innovative period in our ability to move from place to place effortlessly. Some of the most interesting stuff we find comes from personal devices like Honda’s UNI-CUB, but there are other examples which are just as interesting.

The Eat Well Guide helps you eat healthy on your trips and at home

We all know we should eat properly, but man, it’s hard. How can we stay a food angel when there’s all that temptation around; delicious stuff which tastes great but we know is full of badness, just itching to make us fat, unwell or just plain cranky. Right now, a mega pizza with a double delicious topping of chocolate cheese bacon syrup sounds awesome.

Twizy is the electric motorbike your dad’s been waiting for…

Make no bones about it, the new Twizy from Renault is not a car. Sure it’s got four wheels, a roof, two ‘optional‘ doors and a steering wheel, but it’s definitely not designed to replace the car in our affections. To understand what this new electric vehicle is, you need to take a close look at the specifications and core features and suddenly it all pops into place.

The PC-Aero Elektra One electric plane uses its hanger as a giant charger

Cars are not the only means of transportation getting the electric treatment nowadays. Planes are also being fitted with electric motors, either in hybrid form (where there’s some form of conventional motor backup) or pure electric. Now one innovative German company has come up with a zero carbon footprint solution which is really interesting.

Bondidea Solar Wireless Mouse moves your cursor using the power of the sun

The race seems to be on to reduce the power footprint of our computer peripherals, and nowhere more than in the area of input devices. We’ve already got wireless keyboards and mice which can last for years on a single battery, and now there’s a new challenger in the shape of a solar powered mouse. Not only is it a cute idea, but it could be the way of the future in general if the tech works as advertised.

Solio Bolt charges the Kindle Fire with the power of the sun’s…fire

We all need power. As much of it as we can get. Middle aged men need it to prop themselves up, young boys need it to impress, nerds use it to overcome the panic attacks. Wherever you are, whatever you’re doing, at the heart of living is power. Which makes it a real pain that your average gadget can only exist in a powered state for a pitiful few hours.

The grow your own transport meme starts to take off with first African bamboo bicycle factory

Bamboo is a marvellous material, stronger than steel, flexible, durable and very ecologically sustainable. Some varieties can grow over a metre a day! In the Philippines they even make houses of it, and it’s used as scaffolding across the whole of the Far East. The really weird thing is it’s a grass, imagine having to mow it every Sunday? The latest big idea for this wonder plant is to use it for mass transportation, most specifically bicycles.

Alcoa creates smog-eating panels to help curb air pollution

Air pollution from traffic effects both pedestrians and the amount of sunlight entering the atmosphere. Alcoa Architectural Products – a division of Alcoa the world’s leading producer of aluminum and aluminum-related products – has announced it has created “smog-eating” architectural panels – the world’s first coil-coated aluminum architectural panel that helps clean itself and the air around it. Introduced in 2011, the panels utilize a proprietary process that leverages HYDROTECT™ technology from TOTO® and applying titanium dioxide, which breaks down…

Tempronics Cooler Heater Chair keeps you comfortable when your office isn’t

We can’t always pick the place where we work, sometimes we have to put up with stuff. Like dark dungeons with no light, open plan with no privacy or a desk right next to the restroom if we’ve annoyed someone on the top floor. We’re even more subject to the environment, depending on how good or bad our building’s air-conditioning system is.

Solar Focus Cover for Kindle 4 offers an eco friendly way to keep reading

There’s no question that eBook readers are here to stay. The mighty Amazon alone is selling around 5 million of them a year, and they’ve publicly stated that ebooks are now the biggest selling book format jumping off their virtual shelves. It’s not hard to see why. The convenience of carrying around a literal library of titles wherever you travel is really compelling, and despite what purists may say, reading on a screen can be every bit as enjoyable as paper.

Climate Change Myths – Skeptical Science takes a hard look at the facts

Climate change is a topic that won’t go away, and thankfully it looks as though more and more people are beginning to understand the real dangers that man-made warming is likely to create. Sure there are still deniers out there, mostly paid shills for the industrial combines, but even hardened deniers are now starting to see the light and switch sides.
