iPrint – eco friendly printing freeware saves paper, money, the planet

iPrint is a cool little freeware program which lets you set up a detailed print schedule and so save paper and money. The program will also automatically delete pages it thinks are blank –  useful for printing out web sites with orphan pages – and give you the option to print multiple pages on one sheet to save space. I rarely print anything any more, and the stuff I do is mostly for later scanning, but this is certainly a useful…

Fast Forward Powered Pedals – innovation award winner now on its way to prototype?

Congratulations to Stephen Britt whose invention the Fast Forward Powered Pedals has just won a Barclays Bank innovation award. He gets £50,000 cash to move his electrically powered bicycle pedals to prototype stage, and hopefully then on to full production. Video. The jury is still out as to whether this concept will actually work in a real world environment. You have to take the pedals off the bike to charge them, and there’s some doubt as to whether they will actually store enough power in…

ECO Motor EMC3 Commuter – three wheels on my wagon…

The Eco Motor Company EMC3 Commuter is a three wheeled vehicle which will achieve 60 mpg, seat two people and features a 1000 cc engine. It will also, for some strange reason, cost you nearly $14,000 to buy, which seems a little savage considering you’re paying for one less wheel. But what do we know?  The EMC3 Commuter has a strong, nimble body with a compact, yet powerful, engine that achieves two to five times more miles per gallon than most…

Electric Bike Challenge – GoCycle vs Brompton Nano

Electric are beginning to enter a new phase of popularity, spurred on by rising oil prices, cheaper components and a populace eager to save money on their commuting and daily travel costs. The result has been a flood of new entrants to the market in recent months, underpinned by a new crop of cheap Chinese electric motors which are more efficient, and cheaper than ever. I thought I’d take a look at two of the products jostling for our cash,…

T.27 City Car – electric cars get the Formula One treatment

This is the T.27 City Car, designed by Formula One designer Gordon Murray. It features a Zytek Automotive electric drivetrain (probably similar to the one in the Smartfortwo EV) which will propel the vehicle to 105 km/h and give it a range of 80 –  100 miles. A running prototype is scheduled to hit the asphalt in April next year, no news on pricing yet. The thing is based around the rather cools T.25 City Car which is a conventionally powered…

Ecoped CityGo – hybrid electric scooter for the modern mover

The EcoPed CityGo is a Canadian built hybrid electric bike that scoots around for up to 60 kms per 7 hour charge. It’s hybrid because it also comes with bicycle pedals, so you can use your leg muscles if your juice runs out mid-journey. Top speed is 32 km/h, it has ABS brakes and an ignition lock, but we’re talking 59 kg in weight here, so good luck pedaling to work every day. No license needed. Priced at around C$1200. CityGo…

BT-01 Black Trail – the world’s most eccentric electric bike?

This BT-01 Black Trail is 20kg carbon fibre, aluminium, magnesium bodied, 100km/hour electric bicycle with a claimed max range of up to 200 kilometers at 50 km/h cruising speed. Also features a Lithium Ion battery with a charge time of just over 2 hours plus some nice retro style leatherwork by the looks of it. And let’s face it, the looks are…well…different. The other thing that’s different is the price, coming in at a stonking €59,500.00. Yep that’s 50K Euros,…

The Igglu Modular PC – Lets you keep your computer longer

Everyone knows that computers are obsolete almost out of the box. The Igglu Modular PC could change that. UK designer Rob Mansfield’s concept will consist of a single tower with compartments that are color coded to match swappable modules that let you easily update the main parts of your computer. Color coded blocks would fit easily into their matching slot and all parts would be sold in blocks that supposedly would work with your computer. All this reduces the chances…

TerraCycle – send them trash, they make products, we all profit

TerraCycle has a cool idea. We send them our trash, and they make it into stuff that can be resold and used.  Bags, picture frames, clocks, odour removers…there’s a growing range of stuff to choose from. So far they’ve generated over $1 million for charity and recycled over a billion ‘units’ of waste, which sounds very fine, n’est pa?  TerraCycle makes affordable, eco-friendly products from a wide range of different non-recyclable waste materials. With over 50 products available at major…

Electrolux Vac From the Sea Project announced – big brand makes the right noises

The giant Electrolux company has just announced a project to harvest some plastic from those nasty horrible oceanic garbage patches in order to recycle the material into vacuum cleaners. The Vac From the Sea initiative aims to highlight the need to recycle more of our junk, and while it will only produce a few limited edition cleaners, at least it’s a start in dealing with this massive and ugly problem. Now why aren’t more people taking any notice of this and doing something long…

Solar Keyhole Light – say goodbye to the tired and emotional fumbles

This Solar Keyhole Light charges up from the sun (no really) and comes on for 15 seconds when it detects your pathetic inept attempts to insert key into lock late at night. In that regard it’s probably better than the other half opening the door with a solar powered scowl. $7.99.   Tired of fumbling in the dark, trying to find and fit your key in the door lock? Solar light fits right over the lock, helping you find and…

PretonSaver Home – save up to 70% on your printer ink costs

PretonSaver Home is a new commercial software program which apparently can save you up to 70% of your printer ink costs by reducing the amount of pixels you print without destroying print quality. The idea of print optimisation is not new of course, we’ve featured the freeware GreenPrint before, but this is the first time I can remember a program supporting both inkjet and laser. The full version costs $34.99, so really only high volume print users will find this attractive,…

Solar Powered Computer Messenger Bag – charge it to the sun, baby

Solar Powered Computer Messenger Bag. There’s probably something to be said for carrying around a bag which looks like it was designed by a drunken Klingon on a unicycle, but we’re not sure what. Made of tarpaulin, so you can also feel a bit like a piece of ship bound freight if that’s your thang. $149.99.  Constructed of weather resistant Tarpaulin, our solar-powered cases can harness energy from the sun with our exclusive Konarka Power Plastic. The energy is then…
